Of course I knew they were fake, but they were still cool and exciting. No effects really hold up. There are extremely dodgy shots in the Original Trilogy too. Obvious matte paintings, fake looking puppets and aliens, obvious stop motion work, dated lightsaber effects, midgets in obvious teddy bear costumes, etc. The dated CGI for the prequels is just like this. The thing is, you don't notice these things when you're transported into that world and see all of this in action on the big screen with a huge audience.
I dug Force Awakens for what it was, but lets face it, even that had a bunch fake shots in it too that aren't going to hold up with a decades worth of scrutiny. The orange alien yoda and Snoke all looked fake. Why? Because they were fake. It's called movie magic. I think where the industry in terms of special effects and digital characters is at a plateau, they peeked. They'll never get past the uncanny valley so it's pointless to complain.
I'll give two non-Star Wars examples of practical and CGI effects.
>The Terminator
Great film, what I'd consider Cameron's best. Here's the clincher though, it has extremely dated effects. The Arnold puppets were spooky in 1984. In 2015? Not so much. The stop motion is clunky and obvious and it just doesn't look good anymore.

Love this movie, I was obsessed with it when I was an edgy 28 year old faggot relating to the narrator. Thought the movie was perfect. Today? The CGI is fucking awful. It all looks bad.
