The short answer is that it's both. Nature informs nurture which reinforces nature and so on. Also, the idea that the sexes are equal is an inherently silly argument. Certainly, one is not "better" or "worse" than the other, but they are clearly different. Like I said, I'm not using the movies as a guide post here. Women in heroic roles are not an unfamiliar concept to the star wars EU, and even in the OT Leia was a capable leader. There is nothing wrong with a strong female character but in order to really appreciate victories every one must fail at something. They should have made her strong in the force and tied that into her being good with machines somehow.
