Kylo Ren is the best thing ever created in Star Wars. A character with actual dislikeable flaws paired to traits that show a path towards potential redemption. Everyone else was clearly Good or Bad; Kylo is the only guy with some convincing grey area.

Only thing Plinkett did was gather criticisms that had already been laid at the prequels into one entertaining package. His resentment was born out of what most fans of the original trilogy thought about them as they were coming out. I should know, I almost didn't see Revenge of the Sith, I was so angry at Lucas back then.

What makes it great is the sheer imagination that furnishes the world. The monsters; the ships; the planets; the goofy costumes and weapons. I liked the prequels, not for their writing, but for the elements they added to the overall universe and the visual flair with which they did so. The CGI sucked shit, yeah, but I LIKED Jar Jar's underwater people, the Naboo ships, Obi Wan and Anakin's pursual of the assassin through a highi-flying metropolis, that little flying blue Jew thing, the creepy ass racer whose ass Anakin kicked in pod-racing, I fucking loved pod-racing...
It's always been about the visual spectacle, as whatever artistic merit was potentially present in IV never went anywhere, and was slim to begin with. But the OT (even the prequels) were earnest in their desire to provide an adventure, and I enjoyed them for it.

TIE's are just recoloured, X-wings are just a rehash of the original concept art. The starkiller is a caricature of the death star concept, and the carved out belt would mean moving more material than a dozen death stars are made of. The nazi imagry of the empire went from barely subtle to blatant.

I think it depends on what people are looking for. I and II, despite flaws, still had their own self-contained plots and added enough to the universe that felt new and previously unseen.
No one seems to be attacking Abrams for his directing competency, or the dialogue, but for the lack of anything NEW appearing in this movie. In a series famous for its imagination, a big letdown, I think, is witnessing the absence of anything which pushes the universe forward. Rather, we get an action adventure in space, calling itself Star Wars, but without any of the discovery or wonder that make Star Wars so unique.
With a series this huge you're going to have multiple audiences with varying degrees of interest.
The movie was a bit of a bore, for me; non-stop action involving characters who had little time to develop, thus removing me from any conflict or tension I might have felt on behalf of them. It was a special effects reel without any of the new sights that made the boring special effects reel of the prequels at least nice to look at.
That said, Kylo Ren is GOAT. Star Wars accidentally made a compelling character.

Besides the shit stain that was TPM, I think the prequels were the best thing to happen to Star Wars. It gave us the Clone Wars and the Grand Army of the Republic, the 501st Legion, and gave so much added lore to the artillery, armored vehicles and regiments/ranks in the Star Wars universe.
And I'm fucking glad Mr. Plinshit wasn't behind the making of the prequels either. He wanted the turn the clone wars into a 20 minute section where people fight Uruk-hai Orcs. He also wants to scrap Coruscant all together.
Original trilogy had the better story, the prequels made the Star Wars setting even better.

They won't understand or enjoy the originals, but that story is great and simple for a kid to understand. So they updated it and rereleased it.
