George had a good mind for an IDEA of a story. He just needed to let other writers execute the script. Being a control-freak on the prequels and utterly revealing his lack of writing talent is probably why Disney told him to fuck off in regards to him potentially helping with the new movie.
I don't doubt that if it was his 'vision' for Episdoe VII, it would have been better than TFA; but because he would want to control all the dialogue and scene direction, it'd suck shit. His imagination + competent writers would have been a good movie.

I only liked the movie for Kylo Ren; in a sea of mediocrity, they made one interesting character driven home by an extremely talented actor.
Had he been the main character, and the majority of the plot focused on him purusing Luke, involving him in events that further exacerbated his internal conflict, culminating at last in the murder of Han, a set-up for a great trilogy could have been put into play.
What pisses me off is Rey and Finn. Neither of them have any pertinence to the story. They could easily be dropped for a smaller, more compelling cast. Oscar Issac was wasted; Poe did fucking nothing in that movie.
And you're kidding yourself if these characters aren't going to show up in multiple spin-off cartoons, TV shows, and side-off movies. This isn't the last we've seen of Chrome Bitch. She's too shiny not to market.

Kylo Ren was sort of multidimensional, but it's really impossible to tell how many of his contradictions were just inappropriate writing choices (for a Star Wars film) and how much was intentional. it's VERY possible that the writers thought making him more scary by making him inept, and that Rey's Mary Suedom would work for the audience.
it's hard to just write off the whole enterprise as the result of incompetence because of the money involved, but it's actually the most plausible explanation given the evidence.
A New Hope did a much better job of setting up for future installments because the central conflict was still ongoing - Force Awakens leaves us with no real idea of what the remaining capacities of either the Resistence or the First Order are. most likely they will wind up being basically the same as at the start of TFA, i.e. the same as at the start of New Hope, i.e. any continuity is just a matter of convenience.
