Underrated movie in general, or rather, a movie not taken seriously enough often enough. Everyone knows what it is, everyone's seen at least a bit of it, noone respects it

There is also the fact that TVs before were smaller, so people less noticed the problems. If you played a VHS on a 2015 4k TV, of course it would look bad, but it's alright on smaller screens with poorer resolution. I think VHSs had a resolution of 240p or 360p, it's not that bad and at the time, it's the best you could have if you didn't go to the cinema.

I am not baiting, Solaris is good movie if Tark had the self awareness to cut his worst material away and end the movie where it should've ended, after the professor's car ride from the PoV of God watching over the cars

It said all it had to say about 2001 by then and then we wouldn't have to wade through TERRIBLE overwhelming dialogue and horrible fucking acting.

you watched it in the theatre. it was so cheap you could watch it a bunch of times. there wasn't so much media and you didn't consume as much of it, so even though you could see a movie many times without denting your wallet, you didn't need or want to. you also didn't need to because you could commit films to your memory, since you watched fewer pictures and watched them several times.

it was also easier to sneak into showings...

I liked how everything during the dream/fantasy was all really soft lighting and texture, then once it switched it was all sharp and hyper-detailed.

The journey is the thing which makes it
and the progression
That's the real deal
The collection of moments

Saga's also a great character to follow and like I said it has great urban photography and cinematography

It was deliberately set up to look like a painting. Even in the film it's essentially a still frame. It's all in the character composition and the lighting. They even made it a hazy, smoke-filled room so they could diffuse the light evenly. Not even natural lighting I don't think, just well lit.

Cahiers du Cinema disagrees with you. My only gripe with Kubrick is that he's an aesthete above all else - above visual storytelling, characters, emotion, and above life. The individual image was more important than anything, even more than the collective images that make a film. He comes off as autistic. Which is a pretty big gripe personally. Either you're an auteur or you're not. You can be a mediocre filmmaker who's an auteur, but you can't be a mediocre auteur.
