the quality of VHS tapes being poor is grossly overstated, sure there was grain but they were still very watchable unless the tape was cheap and/or old
>>64185595
There is also the fact that TVs before were smaller, so people less noticed the problems. If you played a VHS on a 2015 4k TV, of course it would look bad, but it's alright on smaller screens with poorer resolution. I think VHSs had a resolution of 240p or 360p, it's not that bad and at the time, it's the best you could have if you didn't go to the cinema.
If we're talking best shots in movies, honestly its all the shots in this movie then everything else.

you watched it in the theatre. it was so cheap you could watch it a bunch of times. there wasn't so much media and you didn't consume as much of it, so even though you could see a movie many times without denting your wallet, you didn't need or want to. you also didn't need to because you could commit films to your memory, since you watched fewer pictures and watched them several times.

Cahiers du Cinema disagrees with you. My only gripe with Kubrick is that he's an aesthete above all else - above visual storytelling, characters, emotion, and above life. The individual image was more important than anything, even more than the collective images that make a film. He comes off as autistic. Which is a pretty big gripe personally. Either you're an auteur or you're not. You can be a mediocre filmmaker who's an auteur, but you can't be a mediocre auteur.
