Swear to god, my friend and I thought this was meant to be a deadpan parody of horror movies. Just starting from the intro we burst out laughing.

The shitty score, the awful jump "scares", the horrible makeup, the opening credits roll which seems more fitting for a mockery of reality TV ghost shows, that painting shifting on the wall through what looks to be a shitty flash animation, that cheesy black and white shit, and that awful red text. Once the movie actually started and we saw shit like the midget jumping around, we couldn't take it anymore. We laughed so fucking hard it hurt.

It literally had one point it kept rehashing. There was no reason for the 2nd half of the movie to even exist.
In fact the final scene is just a repeat of the conundrum set out by the Limping man around the middle of the movie. At least the beginning was intriguing and had some humour. Then the director, who obviously was full of himself decided to keep it going 50 minutes longer than necessary.

The horror genre has been in the garbage for like 30 years now and horror fans are desperate for anything to cling to. It's just like how Babadook got tons of praise even though it's terrible.

That's a valid complaint; it was the only one that popped into my mind as having bad directing, bad acting, bad casting, bad special effects (the aforementioned greenscreen is trumped by Langella on fire at the end), and really mediocre writing (Blatty was desperately riding his flash-in-the-pan success with Exorcist). Where it should have been frightening, it was exhausting like being dragged along on someone's drunk weekend.
