The two are not necessarily the same. It can be far easier for a person to pick a popular view of a work and present this as their opinion of a work instead of their own.

One thing I like about RLM is that they never try to alter their past opinions, but aren't shy about letting you know when they've changed their minds. The best example is Prometheus, which they were very lukewarm and forgiving with on release, but now take any opportunity to mock whenever it comes up (Alien commentary, various Pre-Rec. streams, etc.) or the Hobbit films. But it feels like a genuine change in opinion gained over time, unlike Max Landis backpedalling like mad during his interview.
Or it'll be a Star Trek '09 situation, where they give it a pass on release for being competent, but then when the awful sequel comes out criticizing it for letting the material go nowhere.
