Memes aside, what is the real reason did didn't any sequels? It was fully intended to have two sequels, and many of the people involved were already under contract for 2 and 3. The movie did alright in theaters (although not great) and was very acclaimed; sequels would've grossed more than the original after the original's home video release, award wins, word of mouth, etc.

beside. money reasons - they expected it to blow box office records while fincher wanted tons of $$$$ for more movies.

Okay, is it this one:

Dear Amy,
Hello, how are you? I hope you are well- its been a very long time!
I'm writing because I wanted to ask you about the Dragon Tattoo
sequels. Logic tells me they are not ever happening- as it's been
almost 3 years since it came out. But I had still been holding out a
little bit of hope. I know there had been talks to do some sort of TV
version without me. People still ask me about it ALL the time. And I
never know quite what to say. So I guess I just wanted to ask you so I
could know for myself and so that I can let it go for good if that's
the case. It's obviously a character and an experience I hold very
close.
Hope you're doing really well.
Xo
Sincerely,
Rooney

Production budget = 90 M
Marketing = 129 M
Total cost = $219 M

Domestic Gross = 98 M
Domestic Net = 53 M
Foreign Gross = $132M
Foreign Net = $54 M
Total Revenue = 108 M

Revenue - Cost = Profit

108 - 219 = $110,000,000 Loss

For those of you wondering, I got the numbers from this wikileaks document when they were calculating if they should make a sequel. Obviously the answer was no:

https://wikileaks.org/sony/docs/03_03/MKTGFIN/Green%20Light%20Memos/GLMEMOS/FY2015/GL%20Meeting%20Spreadsheets/Girl.Fire.xls

>>
>>64168789
it was a very highly sold book, so they expected it to sell lots. Sadly, the book has a stigma to it like 50 Shades, so most people didn't see it until it was too late. The movie is my personal favorite Fincher movie too, it feels like a fantasy detective movie, and it that right is solely unique. It feels like fellowship of the ring had a child with Agatha cristie.. Also, even the twist is better second and third time, there is soooo much little things added into the movie for the re-watch. That's what makes a movie good, the rewatchability

But the point was answer why TGWPWF was put in TA in the first place. When a movie is put in TA that doesn't normally reverse itself. Jobs was a special case.

When the 4th book came out you saw in the emails they discarded Zaillan's script for TGWPWF in order to do the new book from the new author. Amy wrote in email where she said "Wow, just like Bond!" referring to a character continuing in new books without the original author after his death.

Actors just say this in interviews. The real reason actors do roles like that is 1. Money 2. favours for the studio.

Hollywood is about leverage. Do you think Danny Boyle was passionate about a Steve Jobs movie? No- he was doing a favor for Scott and Amy so he would have leverage over them. Now they owe him- or would have, who knows what is going on now that the movie bombed.

Adam McKay only did Anchorman 2 so he could do he banking movie- when that sequel bombed as noted in the Sony emails he still got to do his banking movie.

Amy asked a bunch of people in the emails for help on who do Ghostbusters before Paul Feig was chosen- Seth Rogen wrote her emails recommending Gore Verbinski- he didn't need to do that, and Amy didn't use his idea, but the fact he did her that favor gives him leverage.

Social Network is the kind of blockbuster Amy wants to be making- like back in the early 90s when movies she produced like "In a League Of Her Own" could be big hits. She comes from a different era of producing- that's why Sony's franchises are such shit, she doesn't want to be doing Spiderman 5 6 and 7, she wants to do Moneyball, Little House On The Prairie and Steve Jobs. I think her getting fired was the best thing that could have happened to her.

If you read the emails, that's not the reason. Look at the financial projections- the budget decreased, it didn't increase for the sequel.

The real reason is it bombed at the box office.
>>
>>64173011
I wonder why it bombed. A lot of people really like it.

Maybe too dark? It isn't exactly uplifting and can tell in the previews it won't be.
>>
>>64172858
Yes, but choosing Pan specifically has to do with the child factor.

Obviously she doesn't care for the movie in any artistic sense. Acting, however, is still a job. While Rooney can basically do what she wants considering her family has more money than the families of everybody browsing /tv/ combined, she still has to treat it like a job. She indeed has to make money, and she has to do stay in good social standing. She then chooses Pan because of her little nephews or something instead of Action Movie Part 3.
>>
>>64173010
There's funny emails where Scott and Amy are trashing Megan for being an unprofessional dyke. Megan has produced lots of great films, but she's not a professional, she's just a rich spoiled hipster who has helped talented people. Amy has real talent in her and professional experience, but it was wasted doing these shit movies for Sony. Sony should make Amy head an indie imprint for them- I think she's as good for the films she did with Scott as Scott was. She's a producer at heart, not an executive.

>>64173242
The movie is intensely detailed and is every little thing about it is just very well produced. From things like staging the old photographs perfectly down to the exact blur of people's body parts takes time and money, as does the detail paid to something like silently and almost invisibly having the character's hairstyles and set dressing change as time passes in the film.

Pretty much, every now and then a film 'sneaks' through and becomes succesful as a new IP. Something like paranormal activity, but you cant ever predict a paranormal activity, producers are just not going to drop hundreds of millions on something that isnt established
>>
>>64173106
>she's just a rich spoiled hipster who has helped talented people
that's all we need fám. someone rich with actual taste. who cares about nepotism if they actually fund great films no one else has the balls to do?

Scott has a pretty much spotless producing record. He commissioned Annie Baker to write/direct a movie and is trying to get Book of Mormon to screen. He's a man after my own heart.
>>
>>64173158
>You're being naive if you think she "chose" that movie. Maybe she wanted to work for Joe Wright but I doubt there was much volitional about that choice.
Is it really that tight? I thought there was at least a little bit of leeway for them. At least Rooney stars in good indie/alternative films. It's so fucking disheartening to see good actors waste their time with shit blockbusters so they can make indie films, only for those indie films to be shit indie films that are even worse than the blockbusters they did.

I'd ask Rooney about it when I see her soon, but I don't know her that well and she's not very open
>>

Yes.

>What made it so expensive? The talent? I can't imagine the sets were cheap, but, also didn't seem like it would be super expensive in terms of special effects or whatever

1. Expensive fees for Dan and Dave

2. Lengthy and therefore expensive pre-production

3. Lengthy and therefore expensive production- Fincher likes to shoot a lot of takes so shooting just takes a long time.

4. Length and therefore expensive post-production. The Sony emails describe Fincher being very acrimonious in the marketing meetings for the film and treating everyone very poorly, which is why they told him to fuck off for Steve Jobs.

Didn't Fincher go way over budget on fucking CG for the movie? Turns out a lot of the lighting and snow flakes or some shit was all fake. How do you fuck up that badly? I thought the movie was all right. Rooney's Lisbeth was by far the best part of it, but I don't know the series would have ever been a huge hit.

I've heard good things about the Swedish trilogy of movies. Might have to download those.

people thought it was just a sadism book. One that is read by people who can no longer get off to Fabio so they find other means. Like 50 shades. Most people heard there was rape in the book and all else failed. Same thing happened with The Golden Compass, people thought it was atheist at heart and so no one saw it
>>
>>64173792
I don't know her well at all. It's more of a peripheral thing; I know people that (sometimes) work in Hollywood, and occasionally I work with them. I met Rooney once before and she basically just stared in front of her (or well I was somewhere where she was. I wasn't formally introduced to her). We needed her for a little bit so we talked to her and she just gave short replies. She didn't seem nervous or anything, but it felt like she really didn't want to be there. Usually actors pretend to be super happy about everything but Rooney just didn't give a fuck. I thought she was seriously pissed off about something, but didn't see enough of her to really tell.

Afterwards I talked about her with someone and he, who had worked with her on a very personal level (I won't go into what this is, but it's something that necessitates contact and trust. No, he's not an actor, and no it's not sex) and he said she just didn't talk throughout the whole thing; unlike anyone he had ever worked with before. He and his assistants had figured she was just retarded or something, but during the few moments that she did speak she was in fact very intelligent, destroying that theory.

From what I experienced myself and what others have told me, I've gathered that Rooney is very cold, not open at all, and most of all an enigma. You honestly can't figure out if she's rude, shy, arrogant, autistic, eager to please, doesn't care introverted, a scheming machiavellian villain, a scheming machiavellian hero, or just something else.

I think Roonie fancies herself an enigma, a Garbo, a Lisbeth Salander, a John Galt, but at the end of the day she's just a rich whore with autism. Fuck her if this is true. Was it wardrobe? Personal trainer or choreographer?
>>
>>64174481
I'm so desensitized from /b/ when I was younger that rape doesn't phase me in a movie, so, hard to say. I agree it didn't seem over the top, but still when ever you do anything with 'rape' it's something a good portion of people avoid anything to do with (not even talking about it, let alone seeing it in a movie)
>>
>>64174512
Although I do want to say that those things also describe Amber Heard, but Amber's actually a nice and cordial person. I don't need people to be fucking social butterflies, but the basics of being cordial and polite in a workplace setting at necessary. I think Rooney's just a snob.
>>
>>64174512
None of those things. However, for some reason, while knowing that this person would never, ever browse 4chan, I'm nervous about disclosing the exact profession of the guy. Let's say it was something more "glamourous" and leave it at that.

What Rooney fancies herself and what she really is I don't know. Genuinely can't tell if she's a cunt or a sweetheart.

Do you have any specific stories? Aside from possible arrogance/rudeness I have no reason to believe she's wholly unlikeable or a whore by any interpretation of the term.

Do you know if she actually considers herself to be mysterious? There's definitely something "off" with her, if this is autism or something else I don't know, but it's more than just a few personality traits.

Well you replied to the same guy twice (me), and while I'm definitely not contesting that I am a weirdo nobody, absolutely no one else acted I've ever worked with, or encountered in general, acted the way she did. It might be understandable, but it's still odd.

>>64175053
Eh, basically, but it's different with her than with other people. I had a friend in high school who would only talk when only one other person was present (regardless of who this person was). He had three friends, me being one of them, and he would only talk if only one of us was with him; if we were hanging out with the four of us he'd stay silent, despite us all being his friends. However when he finally did d start talking he was very extroverted. I suspect something similar is going on with Rooney.

>>
>>64175607
what makes you think she fucked daniel craig? he seemed weirded out by her and fincher. also, he's married.
>>
>>64175666
Daniel was fucking Rooney before he married Rachel and when he got married Rooney got pissed and stopped talking to him. It was a nightmare because they were supposed to promote a movie together.
>>
>>64175727
my mistake.

how do you know all this, if you don't mind my asking?
>>
>>64175727
Rachel married Daniel to spite Darren Aronofsky who was sleeping with Natalie Portman. Natalie's husband is an insufferable asshole and also gay. I don't know what Natalie's deal is. Never met her.

Do you know if Rooney's bf is a merkin? I know nothing about him other than that he exists. Rooney must be somehow likeable if she's friends with Blanchett, because Cate is the coolest person alive.
>>
>>64175948
Natalie's another piece of work. She's a snob and rude, but also very pretentious. She's sort of Rooney's opposite number- Natalie loves to talk about herself and her craft.

But it's always a once way conversation- a monologue. I heard she treated Keira knightly like shit on Phantom Menace.
>>
>>64175948
Rooney's BF is a merkin- she pretends to be straight so her dad doesn't cut her out of the inheritance. And I heard a rumour that Kate doesn't even know this, but I don't believe it, because everyone in Hollywood seems to know Rooney's a dyke.

I also heard she makes a private show of sleeping with him in front of her family (as in sleeping in the same bed not fucking) but I don't know if that's true. But she hasn't come out of the closet to her family.
>>
Oh, and another thing about Rooney is she's a gigantic cokehead.

And people wonder why someone like Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt or Channing Tatum are well liked compared to some of the shitheads working in Hollywood. Sure they're overexposed, but at the end of the day they're all just nice decent people. The only thing you could really say about any of them is that Jennifer's a whore and Channing's a moron, but that's really just subjective- they don't treat people poorly for the most part like some of their peers, and they actually try and put for effort in promoting their movies.
>>
>>64175055
right so women doing incredulous things in books is a Mary Sue thing now. Got it. (sighs for humanity)
>>
>>64175992
I just know she REALLY likes Darren and has done so for years. Don't know why they never got together. I did hear once that Natalie likes to loudly masturbate in hotel rooms and restrooms, but to be honest that sounds like bullshit.

>>64176042

It came out far too soon after A&E had run all 3 of the original tv-movies which were positively received despite (GASP) being subtitled. The kind of people who'd see this already had.

The studios were idiots to make it instead of theatrically releasing the originals. Also, it's a fucking Swedish movie specifically about Swedish politics and neither Craig nor Mara are Swedes.

As much as it pains people to hear this, it was a franchise made for people just smart enough to realize it didn't need a remake.
>>
>>64173106
>Sony should make Amy head an indie imprint for them

That's exactly how Orion was formed. You know, the studio that eventually greenlit a popular novel and let its director burn money until the studio went bankrupt after it underperformed at the box office.

The director was David Fincher.
>>
>>64173422
>Fincher was such a perfectionist he digitally stitched together performances from different takes into the same frame

the man who when tasked with casting identical twins for The Social Network said "No, let's have Armie Hammer's head laser scanned and make a digital puppet adding another $12M to production."

>I'm sure Stieg Larsson is rolling in his grave.
Stieg was an investigative journo who knew his business well enough to write fiction set in it. He wasn't a literary genius and the Millennium trilogy was completed posthumously by someone else.

As long as Lagercrantz knows the business well enough and is true to the characters, it has a chance.

>>
>>64179487
He didn't. Fincher didn't adapt any novel until Fight Club, which was in 1999. Orion crashed and burned in like '92/'93. That guy doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.
>>
>>64168789

The profit margins weren't good enough.

The only way to make it commercially viable is to have a big star like Daniel Craig on board and he'll only do the film if it has around a $50-60 million dollar budget and so you have to spend double that when you account for marketing so you're looking at $100-120 million all in so you have to make at least double that (and most of it in the US) to even brake even.

It made $233 million which is just not good enough. I doubt they lost money but it was close and a weak performance like that on the first one could mean the next one would make even less.

Better question is why does Fincher waste his talent on adapting these airport novels?

Don't get me wrong I really liked both TGWGT and Gone Girl but I would really like him to tackle a more interesting script.
>>
>>64181430
Honestly Daniel Craig was the reason I didn't watch the movie, I don't respect him as an actor and only know him from the Bond movies.

I knew that GWTDT would probably be good once I heard that Fincher was attached but I'm european, so I knew the swedish movies and I also knew a US remake was unnecessary and that it was way too early. I think a lot of people here boycotted it on principle of it being a big American reproduction of an already all right movie that they could've just shown in the US as it was.
