Season 7 was supposed to include a story arc about Yuuzhan Vong scout ship. The authors wanted to go all out and include shitton of EU stuff.

Lost Stars is an actual masterpiece. I'd put it on par with the original trilogy in terms of how good a Star Wars story can be.
Tarkin is also really good if you like the character. Gives him some awesome characterization and backstory.
I heard really good things about Lords of the Sith too.
