They're much more willing to give an honorable discharge to someone that has had at least one deployment in. A grunt spends less than 1 year in the fleet after Infantry Training Battalion before they deploy for the first time. POGs can go many years before deploying a single time. I've seen Staff Sergeants with three ribbons before.

I have no idea what battalion he was in, but its entirely possible they were selected to go in Iraq in '03. Possible his workup was pretty long considering most Marine units hadn't deployed like this since the first Gulf War.
Drivers time in pre dates mine by about 5ish year when units and the Corps was in full swing with deployments and quickly getting units trained up. I deployed after two years in and that was with a 7 month MOS school, our workups were about 3-4 months. No idea how long it takes a infantry battalion but that's how it was for me.
