Snoke is likely Luke's first apprentice. And his first failure as a Jedi Master. Snoke was likely already being trained in the Dark Side by either Palpatine or Vader, however I can see Luke believing that someone who isn't as far gone as Vader could be trained and brought fully into the light. This seems like something Luke would do as while he DID turn Vader back to the light. Anakin Skywalker still died. Needless to say, Snoke likely grew irritated and frustrated with his training (likely wanting to call upon the Dark Side to advance himself) and I'm pretty sure the two eventually fought. Luke walked out the victor, but perhaps like Obi-Wan he didn't finish the job that would later come to haunt him. Snoke finds Ben Solo, seduces him, Kylo Ren kills Luke's apprentices and the academy, Luke leaves Rey on Jakku before dissapearing, and we pick up at the start of episode 7.

I honestly think this might be the direction they're going for. They've hinted at it. He looks a great deal like Vader without the mask - only with all the human features underplayed. There was a leak somewhere that said Snoke's reveal was going to be pretty crazy, that it was going to fiddle with the lore. In the Shadows of Revan expansion for TOR you end up having to fight against Revan's evil side and reunite it with his force ghost. It's possible they're doing something similar here as cheesy as it sounds. They seem to be really honing in on the whole light/dark dichotomy in TFA so it wouldn't surprise me. The light-side was never openly mentioned in either the OT or the prequels, but it's referenced heavily in this new film.
Calling it now - Snoke is Vader Id incarnate. Remember, 'Vader' probably developed over many years. Anakin didn't suddenly snap into the Vader persona as soon as he was put in the suit. That's why he asks for Padme. Similarly, Vader probably didn't just snap back into being Anakin - Snoke is the by product of all the evil Anakin did in the decades after the fall of the Republc. It never made a great deal of sense that Vader could just turn back towards the light, all sins forgiven, and become a force ghost without some sort of fallout.
Of course, this will fundamentally butcher Anakin's character and arc - but it's Disney and Marvel so what do you expect?
