Shit, I know Vader only appeared for about fifteen minutes in A New Hope, but you at least got a general feel for the dude other than "really good at doing flips and glaring".
The protagonist thing is a complaint I have for the prequels as a whole. The OT really tightly follows Luke for the most part. There's never a question of who the focus is on or who's journey your own. The first film follows Qui-Gon until the last twenty or so minutes when he gets speared. The second movie is worse since it's hard to tell if it's the Obi-Wan show or Anakin's wild ride.
And I'm okay with the Jedi being shown as not pure paragons of virtue. But when you're trying to contrast them with, say, Anakin's fall. It's hard to think he's all that shitty when Qui-Gon lies and cheats and literally forces his way into anyone's mind at any given turn.
