Why wouldn't he trust him? If the First Order really wanted him dead, they'd do it properly instead of sending in a single guy who look pretty nervous and is removing his uniform. Secondly, the removal of the helmet does show that he's not a proper stormtrooper who is completely loyal to his commanders.
