I still don't understand how Star Wars is nerdy in any way. It's not trying to be pretentiously preachy or pseudo-intellectual like Star Trek. I mean, seriously, the franchise focuses on characters who are or are trying to be Magical Space Samurai Knights with superpowers. It's literally one of the most popular films out there.
It would be actually more difficult to find a person who hasn't seen at least one of the films prior to Awakens. It would like trying to make it seem like LOTR is uncool when pretty much everyone has seen the movies, even by people who aren't interested in the books or fantasy in general.
I guess my idea of nerdy film is something that only a few people with specialized knowledge of a certain field would understand. Conan The Barbarian is fantasy but I can see pretty much anyone interested in action/adventure reading or watching it because the plot isn't that difficult to understand, neither are the characters, or the terminology.

I do not plan to anytime soon. I still have not grasped how science-fantasy, fantasy, and soft science-fiction, genres usually grounded on the imagination of writers, with easy-to-understand settings, characters, and themes, are categorized as genres nerds are interested in. However, most popular examples of those genres are mainstream icons of popular culture. How is it nerdy when even the lowest common denominator is aware of it?
This happens all the time with my nerdy friends, too. They honestly have little knowledge of the X-Men and Marvel Universe than even the most casual superhero fan, yet are expected to not only be fond of the work, but have a broader understanding of it than even the most dedicated fans who are not nerds.
