Somehow a still really famous misconsception. Raimi wanted to make a short recap with 2, but he couldn't get the rights to the original footage, so he re-did it, but, since most of the original cast was gone, he just did it with Ash and Linda.
In fact, ED2 starts right where ED1 ends. The spirit gets to him and throws him around the forest.
I would've loved to have seen something with Ash waking up in the future as with what happens at the end of AoD.
Maybe some deadites were in a stasis waiting for Ash to reawaken or something.
Slowly Ash goes insane from isolation or comprehending the end of the world.

It's not awful but it can be really bad in some spots.
Tone is all over the place, they still don't really know what they want Ash to be, some jokes fall flat, the middle was kinda bad and nothing really happened in it, some shit went by too fast for us to care, and there needs to be some more work in the side characters.
But man, when it works, it's amazing.
