What is your favorite Western movie and why is it your favorite?

My fav is Tombstone. Brilliant cast, great story, and phenomenal pacing make it a 10/10 western to me

Don't read any spoilers or anything. It really is a unique movie. I've never seen anything like it. In fact, the closest comparison for me is The Thing. It's like a Western Horror.

Why did they start making Westerns aka Spaghetti Westerns in Spain and Italy?
>>

Tombstone was a good movie, but it was almost comic book like in it's characters and action. Once Upon a Time in the West or Unforgiven are far superior.

This is a terrible opinion. tGBD is easily one of the greatest movies of all time. Just because it's popular doesn't make it over-rated.

>>
>>64132339
The original True Grit was one of John Wayne's worst movies, and one of the few cases where the remake is better. For a good John Wayne flick I would either suggest aforementioned The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance or The Searchers.
>>
>>64132500
It was intended to be slow. I think it captured the vastness of the west that way. Also, the climax at the end would have never been so thrilling if the movie didn't have a slow build up.

>>

I can understand that criticism. Personally, that comic book feel is what made the movie one of my favorites. Once upon a time and the Unforgiven do capture the feel of the grim reality that was the American west in the mid 17th century much better than Tombstone.

Tough one.

I suppose Dead Man.

I like that it doesn't romanticize the Old West with gunfights and relatively-clean towns; the "hero" is anything but; and the Injun in it is entertaining for not being the typical Injun.

Also, its ending steers away from tradition.

>>
>>64132500
I agree
For a few dollars more was better. Love Volonté because he's great at being really evil, Angel Eyes is nowhere near as violent or bloodthirsty as El Indio. The musical watch showdown with Van Cleef is my favourite just because of the mystery behind the watch and why it matters so much to both of their characters, a beautifully done scene.
>>
>>64133064

Django because it's silly and violent and an enjoyable watch from start to finish.

Unforgiven tapped into a reality that most people can't appreciate.

The kid that thought it would be "cool" to be a killer....until he finally took somebodies life.

The old veteran killer that, years later after maturity and reflection on his youth, was horrified with his former self, and was unable to live that life again.

And then there's the killer. The man that finally accepts himself for what he really was, despite trying to hide and escape from his true nature for years, and years.

The Western is a genre of various arts, such as comics, fiction, film, games, radio, and television which tell stories set primarily in the later half of the 19th century in the American Old West, often centering on the life of a nomadic cowboy or gunfighter.Westerns often stress the harshness of the wilderness and frequently set the action in an arid, desolate landscape of deserts and mountains. Specific settings include ranches, small frontier towns and saloons of the Wild West. Characters also include Native Americans, bandits, lawmen, outlaws and soldiers

Tombstone is pretty good.

I admit that I need to see more Westerns, but my favorite as of now is Paint Your Wagon

LOL. Just kidding. It's Outlaw Josey Wales.

While movie stars like Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, James Stewart, etc. went and fought in WW2, your hero made war propaganda movies and helped created black lists. You obviously know shit about him, anon. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Loved this shit, really makes you feel how actually fucking hopeless and uncivilized shit was back then, something that seems missing in westerns, the *bad guys* were REAL fucking scary and interesting.

Matthew Fox is surprisingly not shit, Jenkins is pretty funny, Kurt Russell is not some superhero overpowered character like always, Patrick Wilson is legit.

At any point that you feel its gonna start to drag, boom shit happens, ending is fine, nothing annoyed me 9/10.

I think you have a lot more invested in this argument than I do. I simply recognise that he's the face of Westerns - Eastwood's movies are all great, but John Wayne was there first and made a crapload of them. Also, see >>64134815

You're probably right. I actually like many Wayne films. It's just that he was such a prick (I'll refrain from using coward) who played himself up to be a macho man while his peers fought that has always rubbed me wrong.

>Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, James Stewart, etc. went and fought in WW2

Major Clark Gable did 5 combat missions as an observer gunner in a B-17 over Europe, including one raid of Germany, at the ripe old age of 42 years old. His bird was directly engaged by German fighters on two separate occasions. At 43 years of age, he was discharged due to being too old for combat duty. Respect.

Brig. General James Stewart flew multiple combat missions as lead pilot in B-17 bombers during WWII, and flew his last combat sortie as an observer in a B-52 in Vietnam years later. After WWII he maintained a military career in the reserves. Respect to him, too.

Red River,
pretty close to perfect example of the western as 'myth'.
I feel sorry for people who never got a little help measuring the world through some of these films, and it's sad how the perception of the western has turned after Brokeback Mountain, real fuckin sad

there are things wrong with tombstone, mainly some of the cheesy ass dialoge. 'skin that smoke wagon' etc.

but tombstone is one of the greatest movies ever made. i can quote most of the good lines of the top of my head. i had a gf back in hs that could literally quote the whole movie. her dad used to make her do it as a party trick. pretty sure she was autistic.

Probably because it was fucking trash. Every bit of the acting - even the A listers - was fucking terrible, and the scarce, poor dialogue just made it worse. I mean fucking seriously, when they kill those mexicans at their camp, Patrick Wilson wakes up from his sleep and flatly says "wot transpired". Felt like I was watching a highschool play or some shit. On top of that, the premise was just stupid. Non-horror man vs. monster belongs in video games, not in movies that can't do it justice. It was easily the worst movie I've seen in a long time and I'm mad that I just got memed into watching it by you tasteless fucks.

Definitely The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

To me, it is the greatest Western of all time, and the greatest movie of all time.

The music score, the friendship of Tuco and Blondie, and the rivalries between the two and Angel Eyes, are all terrific.

The pacing of the movie is also very good, even at 3 hours long it never felt like a drag at any point in the movie.

And the ending, the most awesome climax I've ever seen in a movie, is just the icing on the cake of an already perfect movie.

I love this film, it is absolutely perfect, and it will always be the greatest film of all time. Anyone who hasn't seen it yet is truly missing out.

To be fair, no-one batted a fucking eyelid at the troglodytes even existing. Never played FF so I don't know what that means.

It perfectly fits the tone of the movie.
>>
>>64140856
i can agree with you that the tone of the music fits the western (although it is actually an anti-western. nobody is literally nobody and never was and never is again, but lives), but what you posted is literally a final fantasy theme. and to tell you the truth, the story is sort of a final fantasy thing. a nobody miraculously kills all the badguys and goes of to live his life normally.

don't get me wrong, i like the movie. but sort of as an absurd comedy. it really isn't a western, it just takes place in the west.
>>
>>64141345
>a nobody miraculously kills all the badguys and goes of to live his life normally.
>and goes of to live his life normally

What? No he doesn't. The ending shot is him having to threaten his barber with a gun to keep him from slitting his throat, because he's no longer a nobody.
>>
>>64139676

Kurt Russell was good, and so was Mathew Fox and the old fart with them.

Unforgiven is the deconstruction of a deconstruction. There's literally nowhere else to go after that. It's the pinnacle of the genre.
