Without Jar Jar's antics and some of the more egregious kiddie shit from Anakin TPM would have been the best of the prequels.
The other big mistake was killing Darth Maul and not leaving him alive to set up the next movie to be about Obi Wan being out for revenge.

From what I understand she was supposed to have more screen time, but they weren't happy with the performance/mocap and so cut out everything they could. What is left is the minimum amount they had to keep, since Maz gives them the lighsaber, exposition, rey getting captured, etc.
Basically they went too far in a few places, but they tried to diminish the effects.
