Has anyone on /tv/ ever actually been on a film set or done any editing or post-production work?
>>
>>64112866
Not me personally. My younger brother works for A&E and has done a bunch of editing and post production work and also did editing for the Tony Awards.
>>
I work in post-production for reality television.
>>
>>64112866
I edit news packages for two channels. It's either really fun or total hell depending on the producer I work with. Did you have a specific question?
>>
>>64112986
How the FUCK do I break into a gig like this?

I've worked on a lot of student films (mostly doing sound but I can edit as well) and I don't have any proper connections.

Student films are hell because they're always poorly executed and people often disappear without giving you reel material
>>
>>64113055
You're gonna hate me but I got my first gig because a friend of a friend mentioned my name to the director of post production at the network. I got the interview, showed him my reel, and they gave me a shot. I got the second job by just applying to everything I saw and eventually I got another interview. This time I didn't even need to show my reel and just got hired on the spot.
>I've worked on a lot of student films (mostly doing sound but I can edit as well) and I don't have any proper connections.
That tells me you need to work on more student films. Keep trying and meeting people, and someone will assuredly have some opening somewhere to recommend you for. Are these films online anywhere? Youtube, Vimeo, anything? I worked on stuff but I wasn't credited for it, but I still used the links in my portfolio because fuck it I worked on them. Also, check out mandy.com. Brilliant fucking website. Depending on your age, location, and level of experience, you will definitely find a small gig there to get started.

One last thing: Avid will make you a better editor, for better or worse.
>>
>>64113171
Where do I meet people who are actually professional and not liberal faggots who constantly talk politics?

I can't stand working with students because of this. The closest I ever got to working on a feature with a "real" filmmaker was some cuck professor I met through students.
>>
>>64113233
>liberal faggots
never gonna make it
>>
>>64113233
you tolerate the liberal faggot documentaries that aren't going to get finished until you get a job for a third rate reality tv production company where you work for 6 months on abc family pilots that don't get picked up and then you get a job at a reality tv sweatshop where you get the privilege to stare at the shittiest tv in america for ten hours a night.
>>
>>64113233
I sympathize, but that is not the right attitude; I don't just walk into my edit room and tell my supervisor which producer I want to work with that day. You need to keep trying and work with as many people as you can, if only to see how many different "creative types" there are. Also, you will learn how NOT to work which is probably more important as an editor, especially if you want to transition to directing or producing. I'm not going to tell you you're going to make it big as an editor, but you will probably get somewhere if you work as much as you can while you're still young. I didn't get my first pro gig until I was almost 24, and plenty of others get started later.
>>
I have a cousin who became a miserable shit working and waiting for a position on The Discovery Channel Canada.

He earned it but, he's a fucking dick.
>>
>>64113343
But dude, you get paid to watch TV. It's the ultimate dream job.
>>
Film student here. Firstly this anon here
>>64113233
totally second. Pisses me off as well.

I recently shot my own short film on a 6000usd budget, almost finished post-production and taking it to festivals next. I tried to avoid the all the student film clichés and faggy screenplays and made a period comedy. Apart from that I've been to quite a few short film shoots, usually as boom operator. Never got me anywhere, so I'll try my luck working as an independent filmmaker (no industry here because Europoor). Hoping that by doing commercially viable projects I'll get somewhere, since most euro flicks are pretentious garbage. Wish me luck, /tv/. Or don't.
>>
>>64113454
It should be a rule that student films be comedies, or at least have comedic elements. It's the only thing a fairly inexperienced filmmaker can do justice. Example: https://vimeo.com/111946953

Does your film have dialogue?
>>
>>64113530
Many film students look down on comedy saying that it's not as deep as drama, obv they're just lazy bastards who don't want to come up with a good screenplay. It's always easier to write some social drama nobody gives a shit about.

I have loads of dialogue, it's a fairly classically structured film. Money went into period clothes, location, camera and film (shot on 16mm, fuck yeah), so to be practical we shot it all in like 2 and a half days (for 13 minute runtime). Then again, this allowed me to get better actors, since I only had to get them for two days.
>>
>>64113610
I wish you the best of luck, and that does sound like a good movie, but
>film
I thought you were trying to be commercially viable? Digital would greatly reduce your budget. But I suppose you were going for the right "look".
>>
>>64113696
Short films can never be commercially viable, so I used it to get the looks (set in the 1930's).
Nevertheless, shooting 16mm is really not expensive (for standard budget features). But yeah, if I worked on something commercial it would surely not be a priority.

It's just so awesome to shoot on film. Why did it have to die out?
>>
>>64113770
Because people didn't want to learn. When I went to NYFA they were talking about discontinuing the "film" class (as opposed to digital). HUGE uproar as you can imagine. There will always be people who want to do it the old fashioned way.

No but I do have very strong opinions about Star Wars
>>
>>64113171

this is pretty much exactly how it works. a trained monkey could do 99% of post production jobs and every job where I used to work went to a friend of somebody.

a few times I had the parents of people with worthless degrees call up demanding to know why their kid was turned down after interview. it's a pretty soul destroying job after a while which is why I quit.
>>
>>64113859
I honestly think it takes a special kind of autism to want to work in post production. Lucky me.

No but I work in a movie theatre

Just pretend dude
>>
>>64113818
The cost factor is extremely overrated. Especially 16mm is dirt cheap. Film+developing+telecine+shipping to and from developing comes down to about 400 bucks per 400ft reel, shooting a 4:1 ratio (which is standard in europe) means 400 minutes of film, which is 40 reels, ie 16.000 usd. For another 4-5k you can BUY a super16 camera, which is more economical than renting if you'll be shooting more than a few days. Comes down to little more than 20k for a feature. What's 20k on a 500k-1m budget? Also considering that otherwise you'll have to rent a high-end digital camera, which isn't precisely cheap, either.
>>
I editted porn one summer
>>
>>64113055
It's literally no different than applying for any other job dude. Turn your resume in to whatever company and if they want to give you a shot then they will. It might not be steady, you may work a show then go back to waiting tables til you get another. Just fucking apply.
>>
>>64113956
Have you met any movie stars?

Learn to use them m8. Nothing feels better than fucking a female who tells you she's a feminist before taking it up every hole 30 mins later.

I worked on Dead Snow and Dead Snow 2
And a few other movies by the same director that is not worth mentioning cause nobody outside norway has heard about them, but i worked on 7 productions so far

i've done screenwriting and production work with Disney for a few years now (special event type stuff) and a handful of reality tv shows not Disney (dancing, singing, and cooking ones). out of the biz now. like several others on this thread, i also got the gig due to a friend, who was a predator (producer/editor). nepotism makes the world go 'round, mate. network and make connections is the way to go. i'd also recommend moving to a city with a burgeoning production scene. everyone moves to LA. try somewhere like Miami, Austin, Asheville, or any up and coming cities.
>>
>>64116207
Neat! How long does something like that take in a day?
>>
>>64116238
Well once i had it fitted once, i can get the prosess of putting it back on down to 6-8 hours, it all depends where its going to be in the shot, a zombie face thats going to be in a closeup takes longer, and a background zombie as little as 2-3hours
>>
I want to write and direct but the only shit I'm interested in makes me sound autistic to anybody I talk to about it. And I haven't been able to write anything in about a year without losing interest because I know nobody else is going to give a fuck.

I'm thinking about just trying to write novels instead.

I don't mind living in NYC, but the thought of living around LA seems fucked.
>>
>>64116338
mate, if you lose interest in writing or creating because you're scared/worried of what people think, then maybe it's better off you not create anything. grow a pair and get the work done, if you're ever gonna. btw, more encouraging words you're never going to hear.
>>
>>64116399
Good luck getting around with no car. Public transportation out there is notoriously shitty.

As far as apartments go there are great monthly rates made for people like you.

I was an extra on a movie once. Didn't like it, long boring hours and constant repetition.Wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless you see it as a last resort to try to squeeze your way into show bussiness

I'm an indie filmmaker
I just about managed to scrape together a short film about 6 months ago on zero budget with some uni mates where half the script wasn't filmed... (I don't study film btw)

I somehow used this unfinished short film as proof to recruit completely new people to make another short film with a budget of under £100. We managed to film the entire thing! It's just been submitted to a few festivals so here's hoping.
And yeah, I wrote, shot and edited the entirety of both films

And the lead girl in the second one is one of the hottest girls I've ever met in my life. And after we finished the film, we're sort of going out now. I'm becoming a stereotype already

I'm gonna guess TDKR since you said /tv/ specifically

Man, I love bitches kicking the shit out of each other. It's much more interesting than men fighting, because you expect it from guys. It's much rarer to see women fighting in a different way than pulling on each others hair and scratching.
