There's 'canon' and there's canon. 'Canon' is a stamp you put on something to increase it's theoretic worth to nerds. Canon is what the future movie makers will bother considering when they add to the story.

The way they both display high competence until getting taken out by freak accidents is probably one of the most realistic things about this series. Soldiers play the odds every day, and whenever you gamble, eventually you lose. Most of Seal Team 6 was killed by some scrub who scored a lucky hit on their chopper while they were on some random assignment
