In the Charlie rose interview Lucas also mentions that he had more than 2000 employees to consider, and that the prequels cost him a lot and put them in jeopardy. It's easier to sell this burden to Disney than to assume full responsibility when push comes to shove. When you have thousands of people on your payroll, a commercial failure is the type of stuff that keeps you awake at night I would imagine.

That did seem pretty SHOTS FIRED to me, especially when Lucas was saying publically right after the Disney deal that "Disnety was a good home for Star Wars".
I almost get the feeling that when he sold SW to Disney, Lucas was under the impression that they would be listening to his input on the new trilogy, and then when the buy out was done, Disney changed their mood, took a look at the idea Lucas had for 7-9, and Disney told him "NAH, WE DON'T LIKE THIS, BYE".
It just seems like Disney kicked him to the curb and Lucas wasnt expecting that treatment.
