Phantom Menace works because it still seems like everyone was wholly invested in it at that point. After it released and everyone realized how clueless Lucas is, it's like the entire cast sort of checked out.

I'm watching a documentary on the making of Star Wars; the filming, editing, effects, etc. and there's one thing that TFA is missing from all the other movies: a sense of wonder.
Look, I'm not going to defend the prequels. Lucas is a really bad director (Harrison, Carrie, and Mark don't pull their punches), but he's still a wonderfully imaginative creator (even if he desperately needs editors). That's missing from The Force Awakens - that Lucas touch. Star Wars is above and all else a throw back to his childhood, to the serials and films of the 1930s. It's in the design, it's in the dialogue, it's in the damn score.
I think if it wasn't called "Star Wars", nobody would really care about TFA. I think it rides heavily on the coattails of the films that came before it, and relies heavily on the nostalgia and expectations of the fanbase. It's a technically proficient film, but it doesn't feel like Star Wars; it's like someone went down a checklist of things and references to make and called it a movie.
Maybe we laughed at George a little too much, and maybe they should have listened to him a little more.

And this is where it gets tricky for me. The only good part of Awakens was Kylo Ren. The rest was just a rehash with a new coat of paint, so it loses a lot of points for not having anything original. Too many things happening by pure coincidence, and the humor was very weird and felt off. Clones and Phantom were at least unique and were trying to tell their own stories. As far as rewatchability goes though, I'd probably watch Awakens more than the other two, but I wouldn't enjoy it.

I agree it's stupid. The real issue with Endor/the ewoks isn't the fact they beat the Empire's attack (though, again, it is goofy), it's the fact those scenes drag on and hurt the pacing of the film. It all just feels like stalling to give Leia, Han, and the droids something to do.
