Although the prequels were poorly executed, I think the overall story is really fucking cool. How Palpatine orchestrates the blockade of Naboo to get himself elected Chancellor, how he initiates the Clone Wars to transform the Republic into the Empire. If he'd have just let someone else direct they could have had something.

Rightfully so, his success boiled that fucking brain mass of his and make him go completely ape shit about Star Wars with his retarded ideas. I wouldn't be surprised if he had been retarded to begin with and only his colleagues held back his stupidity for the first few movies. Even in Episode VI you can already see hints of how cheesy and god-awful his ideas really were.

The thing is that creativity and good art flourish under restrictions, when someone sets forth certain guidelines and also shoots down some of your ideas you form better ideas and create better things, this is why the original trilogy turned out so well, people said "nah Georgey boy you gotta do something different," and he hired people to help with writing and directing and stuff, whearas during the prequels he was surrounded by yes men and while some of the ideas were really good, they weren't properly developed and the execution also suffered somewhat to a degree.
I definitely think that a lot of the hate is unwarranted, but it's not like he hasn't messed up.
