Watched this movie last night after seeing it every where.

>slow paced

>below average story
>tons of long-horizon-looking shots

Is this a meme or something? This movie is a flat 7, if anything.

Mad Max was movie of the year and you all know it.

Emily Blunt's story just had no climax

I guess when Alejandro shoots her but that scene was so lame considering how intense the whole tunnel scene before it was

Sicario and The Gift were movies that pleasantly surprised me this year.
>>
>>64083419
I liked Mad Max better, but Sicario is up there as one of the best of the year as well.
>>
i turned it off after less than 10 min when it became clear it was about strong female agent showing the old stupid white men how it's done
also no doubt she fucks her nigger partner at some point
>>
What I don't get. Is that the CIA is so corrupt and bend the rules so much, from killing innocent people to putting a gun to an FBI agents head and forcing her to sign a release paper, YET they were soo concerned of playing by the rules on the bridge and not shooting the armed men until they tried to engage first. Why?
>>
>>64084278
You should go back and finish it. That movie is about her getting emotionally broken down to nothing by the end. Spoiler: She loses, like completely.
>>
>>64084181

I agree.

Blunt was boring though, especially with her blunt (hehe) attitude thinking that things should always be done by the book even though she had lost friends to these savages.
>>
>>64082609
I marathoned the whole movie, it wasn't very good.
>>
>>64084278
Honestly they handled the female protagonist very well. She has her strong character moments when she first raids the death house in the opening and when she kills the masked bandit on the bridge, and she is also vulnerable and gets screwed over through the whole movie. I see nothing sjw about this movie, just because a movie has a female in it doesn't mean it's sjw.

The last shot of her should've been her bleeding out on her apartment floor looking confused and scared

That's what I mean, if they don't give that much shit about doing illegal stuff, why even care about bringing the FBI in? Surely they can fake an FBI presence if they can fake or handwave away other illegal stuff.

It immediately joined in my mind two similar drug-themed thrillers that were rather amusing at the time but nevertheless forgettable, Traffic and The Counselor. There's nothing worth remembering about any of them, except for meme things such as the walled-in corpses, Javier Bardem's spiky haircut and the overuse of coloured camera lenses.

Sicario was amazing too, to be honest my family
>>
Watched it last night. Was the whole point that you can only fight these savages by bending rules and sometimes lowering to their level, and even then you can never truly win?
>>
>>64087309
More like you have to take out the big boys, because everyone and their mother is involved in the little leagues, like the cop mule. But along your line of thinking, "how far would you bend the rules" and "here's a swat that plays by the rules, look at her character development xDDD". I liked the movie, and hope they make a sequel.
>>
>>64087309
They say countless times that drug traffic hasn't decreased in the slightest and that they were just trying to get the colombian cartel back into power.

The point is that people will keep killing each other and the drug will never stop flowing and that the CIA are pretty much as violent as the cartels.

This is the land of wolves

Nah, it wasn't blame. Can't blame 2 agents when you have a fuckton if men. They mention in the movie exactly why they bring along the FBI. CIA can't operate on U.S soil, so they HAVE to bring along another agency, and legally pretend to be advisors.
>>

>>64088559

Is it true how they potray the FBI as a bunch of pussys? They always seemed to have cool detective type of jobs , but damn did this movie make them see baby tier. Especially when they were throwing up in the beginning and when the CIA task force said the two FBI agents were going to slow them down and get in the way.

The Duke Of Burgundy > Queen Of Earth > Tangerine > Sicario

Great day btw, mate
>>
>>64082609
There are a lot of films I have to catch up with this year, but my top three are:

1. Phoenix
2. Sicario
3. Queen of Earth

All three have women as main characters; ONLY in Phoenix could the main character be even slightly described as 'strong' (more 'resilient'; survived a fucking concentration camp but has a completely shattered identity), and none of the three can be described as 'winners'.

Yet, this is part of what made those films compelling. Some of those pushing for feminism need to see that allowing a woman to be incompetent, psychologically scattered, self-absorbed or over-powered (much like fully formed people can be) is a more agentive portrayal than over-compensating for strength?

That's why Elisabeth Moss' clusterfuck of a character in Queen of Earth, for example, who cannot be described as physically or mentally strong at all, or Emily Blunt in Sicario who is completely out of her depth, is better than the likes of Rey
>>

>>
I dont get why they let emily blunt live
Especially after what she saw, and that she actually said she was gonna blow the whole thing
just seems like letting her live would be a huge risk for the CIA to take
>>
I liked mostly because of the characters. They're well done. I like how Kate is a stron girl yet still comits stupid mistakes, has a childish view on crime and breaks down at some point. I like how del Toro is burned out by his tragedy yet isn't simply some killing machine, he cherishes Blunt but at the same time is only using her and is like detached from humanity. I like how pretty much everybody working in the operation calls the fbi agents retards.
>>
Honesty I was pretty disappointed by the movie. Cinematography, sound design and acting were all excellent but the story was a mess. It felt like several different story lines smashed together, and none of them got the focus they deserved. Plus the final scene was so heavy-handed it was ridiculous.wow, violence is an everyday part of these people's lives! Thank god sicario could teach me the truth about Juarez, I had no idea

Everyone complaining about the shots. I think they were there to convey the sheer mass of the problem. The shots were mostly of majestic plains. It had a really existential taste to it; I think you were supposed to feel small.

The film is the best of the year but I won't make a large post about it.

All I will say is that it hooked me from the start and, with great technical work and a specific and intriguing perspective, managed to keep me captivated in a play founded on the socio-political mess and war that those 20% of the American population contribute to by doing hard drugs.

Sicario was at best a 6/10 for the like single action scene at the end where the cartel guy goes ham.

Besides a terrible script for the lead actor the films greatest downfall was its uneven pacing.

Takes forever for boring main character to develop, then they rush through who the main antagonist is in a couple minutes. Then its slow boring half assed shit until the last few minutes of the movie where the cartel guy goes ham on some criminals for reasons that are barely explained during the movie.

The movie seemed very unrealistic.

I mean theyre jumping through cose quarters with Rifles instead of SMGs which find I guess the rifle is more multirole, but on top of that youre telling me the fucking super secret military units couldnt afford a few suppressors?

The only good parts to this movie were when cartel guy goes ham, and we get a little bit of action. Then the side story of the mexican police officer whose forced into working for the cartels was interesting but it could have been done better with more character development instead of extended boring shots of him sleeping or eating cereal.

I agree, pacing and plotting of the movie was very strange. It would've been nice if the corrupt police officer was an actual character and not a random casualty we were supposed to feel sorry for
>>
Why did they use Medellin as an exemplar of stability?

Wasn't it a chaotic war zone? It was probably worse than Juarez
>>
>>64097651
i think he really was a lawyer, it adds some context as to why he knew that mexican official at the air force base.

He's old enough to give a decent amount of time between being a lawyer and becoming operator as fuck.
>>
>>64098675
To me that little side story was an interesting and emotional part of the movie. When they tied it together with the main story line it was pretty neat.

However when the corrupt cop was killed I didnt feel anything because they didnt develope the cop as a character. I think they could have spent an extra 20 minutes or so developing his story and had a better movie.
>>
>>64098728
I dont think the people who developed this movie did like ANY research into what they were doing.

They just chose the biggest scariest guns, threw in a couple headlines from Juarez news paper as scenes, and then tried to make the columbian guy seem bad ass.

How can a movie this slow paced go by so fast?

I'm fucking serious, just seen it, pretty good but Blunt's character is not interesting enough for what the story tries to do, but anyway the 2 hours fucking flew by, and the movie can get kinda boring. It's like some fucking anomaly in moviemaking.

>Elite special forces team enters confined quarters with just rifles. Happen to all be 16 inch full barrel ars and not a single suppressor.
Meanwhile the medellin guy is on a multilane highway in mexico and hes carrying around an MP5(A3?) with a suppressor. Why?
The best part is if you watch closely during that highway firefight scene the gun he uses actually changes during the scenes between the MP5(A3) and a MP5SD3 with no rails.

In the shootout with the guy in the house full of bodies the cartel guy has a fucking 590, which is like a 500 dollar gun, but back in mexico the cartel high stakes player whose cartel members are trying to rescue cant even afford a tech 9s for his guys? He has to use A&W 76s.

A lot of government guns trade hands all the time so its good to make sure they are capable of a variety of things.

For example a typical soldier in the armed services wont need raised sights on his pistol but a specific group might need to use suppressors at some point so its easier to just manufacturer all the pistols with raised sights and to special order a small batch, particularly when it doesnt impact performance.

Likewise a rail system on an mp5 is about as effective as a typical grip so it would make sense to just get a bunch with rails if you ever needed grips, flashlights, lasers, etc.

they didn't have suppressors because the op called for them to make a shit ton of noise, it was kinda the point. I'll agree on the disparity of the guns used by the cartel members stateside vs mexico and that the delta/cia guys could have gone with shorter barreled rifles.

I was more curious on when you phrase it as the "biggest and scariest guns" when none of the guns could be considered as such.

Is it that crazy in mexico? How do we have so many mexican 4chan users? Juarez looks worse than 3rd world.

Eh, I think the point of the ending showed that a lot of Mexicans hate all the violence and cartel. They just want to live in peace in a close knit kind community where they can raise there children and watch them play soccer matches in peace. I'm sure most mexicans are friendly and have no relation to cartels.

>>

>Looks worse than the third world

At it's peak a few years ago it was topping Syria/Iraq tiers of violence.

Apparently it's settled down a lot now.

I remember when one Cartel had an open Facebook page with pictures/videos of a bunch of women they had hostage, and you could vote for how you wanted them killed.

Sure enough they put up a video of them getting rekt with axes.

Then again, I say it's calmed down, but people are throwing a hissy fit over those 50 or so school kids that just got upped and disappeared one day a few months back.

>I mean theyre jumping through cose quarters with Rifles instead of SMGs which find I guess the rifle is more multirole, but on top of that youre telling me the fucking super secret military units couldnt afford a few suppressors?
Haven't watched the movie yet so this is totally out of context for me, but SBRs and carbines have pretty much completely replaced SMGs in every role. Pistol rounds are simply shit compared to rifle rounds regardless of their powder load and barrel length, and they're no cheaper so there's not much reason to use them over a rifle.

Also genuine suppressors are expensive and heavily regulated, and from what I understand, they're operating under the CIA or FBI, civilian agencies. Suppressors don't do much either in a firefight either other than play nice on your ears. If they really wanted suppressors for whatever reason, they could make them out of oil filters if necessary.
>>
>>64104892

Not him/you, but DevGru generally use modified HK416's on raids, close quarters or not.

In his book on the subject, one of the team leaders on the Bin Laden raid describes how he had a few HK416's, some shortened down by their weapons guy for this sort of job, and that he also had SMG's but didn't use them in Afghanistan or Iraq.

The lack of suppressors seemed to be more a plot thing at the end, and earlier on when they're running security on the extradition, it seems redundant to use them, especially when you're sitting in SUV's with limited room.
