Have people actually said Luke was one too? Didn't catch that. He does get a fighter ship and is instantly trusted as part of a squadron in the end of the first one, but usually he's an underdog and just doesn't know what the hell he's doing most of the time.
I was surprised about Rey not really being a 100% badass from the get go, since writers are now terrified of suggesting women are not outstanding steel-willed polymaths without any need for growth or personal betterment of any kind, but it didn't last long. Still, I think it was enough; that shot when she's cleaning junk and looks scared of her boss was enough to win me over.
