I think in the cases of Hunger Games and Twilight, people dislike the characters because they're supposed to be boring with no personality so that people can self-insert as them, but the thing is that people don't care about that. They just want a good character with lots of personality. Unfortunately having personality means no negative traits at all when it's a female character so all you have left is the true definition of a Mary Sue.

If you believe that Rey is supposed to be a direct lift of Luke, then in retrospect, describing a Mary Sue- in relation to Rey- as someone who is too powerful was a mistake. I expect the protagonist of a Star Wars movie to be powerful, especially a Skywalker. The problem with Rey is that she's boring, almost to the point where she kills the tension of the movie. She has no character arc, she's totally static. It has nothing to do with the concept or traits of the character, or there being a female protagonist in Star Wars, and everything to do with the plot of the movie being a total cakewalk for her. The one point in the movie where she encounters any meaningful resistance at all is essentially an end-of-level videogame cutscene, where the villain just pauses her ability to move. That is not good writing.
If you ascribe to the "same, but different" approach that Plinkett pointed out in his first trailer review, where traditional elements are re-contextualized, then the problem is a bit different. The film intends to flip the dynamic of Luke on its head: where Luke is an overconfident rookie who feels that life is holding him back, Rey is humble and hypercompetent yet is terrified of success and moving forward. The movie doesn't really establish this well outside of a few lines where Rey states that she wants to go back home, there's no great visual storytelling like Finn's hands shaking before the village massacre. The flimsy (and lazy) flashback in the midsection of the film fails to sell Rey's parental issues, which the film around her doesn't seem too concerned with- nobody else cares about Rey's parents in this movie. We never get the sense that Rey surprises herself with her accomplishments (and therefore cannot share in her joy), and her "parent" arc is left for later films.
In both cases, Rey is a good character made boring by a poorly-considered script.

Rey is a well acted but pretty bland character that could have used a flaw or two to even her out. As far as how powerful she is, this is Star Wars, she's supposed to be a mythical archetype hero, those are always over powered as fuck and most of the time in star wars they are. I have no issue with how strong she is, I only take issue that she doesn't have any of the character flaws that made Luke Skywalker feel like a real person. Anakin is so poorly acted and so strangely set up that you can't even make a comparison.

I was more happy with what was left out of those scenes. Namely a bully or a band of bullies that antagonize Rey and pick on / belittle her for being a girl and then there's a pay-off where she kicks their asses or fixes a thing they can't and we get that shot where the girl triumphs over the stupid men.
Instead we actually get some real character building where we see how she lives, we see how she earns a living, we see that people don't really respect her, and we see that she isn't happy with her life and doesn't want to end up like the old woman over at the other table. Pretty great.

The problem is that her character would have been content to wait on that miserable heap of sand for her parents until she was as old as that woman. Rey doesn't desire to leave, she spends the whole movie wanting to go back.
The film fails to visually\emotionally establish that Rey is terrified of success and moving on with her life. Despite her grrl power independent streak, she wants her parents to rescue her.
Establishing this would have been as simple as placing two empty seats at the table in her AT-AT home, establishing that she's waiting for them to just walk in at any moment, that their absence is a massive, suffocating void in her life. The movie just utterly fails to sell the idea that she is emotionally tethered to Jakku, which makes her surprising amount of success boring instead of liberating.

Technically that isn't wrong, the reason the term is called "Mary Sue" is because that is the name of the author that essentially self-inserted herself into a story as a brilliant can-do-no-wrong character.
The term now encompasses a whole lot more, but the original definition is spot on there.

I think we got more from the movie telling us that she was waiting for her parents to come rescue her from that shithole more than she wanted to return to said shithole and squat there the rest of her life. The Maz scene where she says that "the belonging you seek is in front of you not behind you" points towards her wanting to no longer be alone and find some sense of being a part of something.
Not sure what she would want back on Jakku other than more portions. By the way I just have to say that them showing that stupid ass bread rising was one of the best things I've ever seen in a star wars movie and I can't explain why it felt so great.
