JJ basically played it safe with re-hashing the original shit for a new post-millenial audience, which was outright cowardly
it was actually fucking awesome. The two things i didnt like where the fact that there was again a fucking death star and that an untrained force user managed to bit one in training but that bit isn't fully accurate yet. Also the fucking references were a bit annoying, i mean come on how much fan service do we need to know that it's a star wars movie
It lacked the artistic profundity of the prequels and the originality of the original trilogy. Didn't feel at all like Star Wars.
It was basically a Marvel flick masquerading as Star Wars.

Perhaps what ticks me off more than anything is that nothing really changed in the 30+ years after ROTJ. We've all seen what 30 years can do to the Star Wars universe, and jack shit happened. TFA's plot could've happened, at the most, maybe just 5 years after ROTJ, minus the whole Han's son thing. Lucas starved fans for 18 years leading up to Episode 1, and that movie was a completely fresh take on the world. I wanted something more along the lines of how Episode 1 felt compared to the ones preceding it. Some sort of culture-shock of new planets, factions, and characters. Much of the "new" stuff in TFA is redesigned OT stuff.

Actually I'd argue that the new Luke is a dark jedi at the moment.
Kylo fits Luke's general character and arc more closely than Rey does, even if Rey follows a similar path.
He is a young man training in the ways of the force, trying to emulate his Jedi relative. He must confront his father in order to complete his training and redeem/kill him to stave off the dark/light sides of his personality. Etc...
Not a contrarian but the movie does not deserve a 95% on RT.. It's a B- movie at best

I got no qualms with no Kylo Rens or Reys, but the film was a mess. If anything the characters were interesting and likeable. Bring back those old fucks though was ridiculous.
There's nothing wrong with improving on the plot of episode IV. The movie brought the joy of the original Star Wars trilogy to the new generation, can't ask for anything better. 10/10

To be fair family, I can't see how TOO much would change in the galaxy, even in 30 years - even with the Emperor's death, the empire would be still fuck huge and the rebellion/new republic would still be relatively small/not as well financed or have as many resources. So I'd imagine that the two sides would still be fighting.
What they could have done though, would be to have the internal factional struggles definitely within the Empire and possibly within the New Republic. I'm getting vibes of this with Hux and Kylo, and I'm hoping we see some kind of factional war in the next movies.
Honestly, the way I see it is that this movie turned out almost as good as it could have given the circumstances. If Lucas had decided to make the new trilogy, even with the stain of the prequel trilogy on him, he'd still be at liberty to do whatever and go in whatever direction he wanted - it was his series after all.
But now that Disney bought it, they have no credibility in relation to this franchise, so in order to establish their hold on this brand, they HAD to play it safe (possibly a bit too safe in this case) or risk losing support of a sizeable portion of the fan base/their revenue.
Now though that this movie has established a good reputation for Disney, they have FAR more implicit creative control as to how they want to take this series, so I am eagerly awaiting the next film.
HOWEVER, if Disney decides to follow Empire with the next film, then we can safely say fuck those filthy jews.
