Jurassic World I thought was a pretty solid flick (if not soley for aunt Claire)
>>
those are all synonyms, you're a moron

To be honest Creed is also a flick and Sicario is only a movie.

Film of the year: The Lobster

So I understand the idea of a "flick," but what differentiates a movie from a film?

Film vs Movie vs Cinema is real, but kino, fllick, etc were added by tasteless drones that were made insecure by this whole thing.

“A movie is made for an audience and a film is made for both the audience and the filmmakers. I think that The Game is a movie and I think Fight Club‘s a film. I think that Fight Club is more than the sum of its parts, whereas Panic Room is the sum of its parts. I didn’t look at Panic Room and think: Wow, this is gonna set the world on fire. These are footnote movies, guilty pleasure movies. Thrillers. Woman-trapped-in-a-house movies. They’re not particularly important.” - David Fincher

"My film is not a movie. My film is not about Vietnam. It is Vietnam. It's what it was really like. It was crazy. We were in the jungle, there were too many of us, we had access to too much money, too much equipment, and little by little we went insane." — Francis Ford Coppola

>By contrast, in the US "movie" is the predominant form. Although the words "film" and "movie" are sometimes used interchangeably, "film" is more often used when considering artistic, theoretical, or technical aspects, as studies in a university class and "movies" more often refers to entertainment or commercial aspects, as where to go for fun on a date. For example, a book titled "How to Read a Film" would be about the aesthetics or theory of film, while "Lets Go to the Movies" would be about the history of entertaining movies.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMsp05iSk7s

movies are about economics.
cinema is about esthetics.
film is about politics.
-"How To Read A Film" by James Monaco

Also the separation is recognized in these texts
Bresson's Notes on the Cinematographer
Tarkovsky's Sculpting in Time
Delleuze's Cinema I&II

Flick= No artistic merit, pure entertainment focus.
Movie = May have some artistic elements but "entertainment" is prioritized.
Film = Artistic focus any "entertainment" elements are ancillary.

There is artistic merit and underlying themes about the world and it's future in Mad Max making it a movie. It's not deep or anything bit it's there. If it was a flick it would have been more like Star Wars where they prioritized pandering and action over substance

Except not. The cancer of this board is infantilization. Be it in the form of capeshit appreciation, video game crossposters, IMDB sensibility fedora tippers. The cure to that cancer is a focus on pro-art elitism. Which is exactly what the movie/film dichotomy encourages.

Sicario definitely has more "movie" elements than people seem to admit.

I enjoyed it, and it got me thinking, but in no way does it tell a true enough tale without entertainment based choice to fit your autismal "film" qualifications.

Definitely solid though.

I don't miss the pretentious twentysomethings that were here around 2010-2013 that only acknowledged obscure festival slogs as film, but at least they presented something new, challenged people to expand their boundaries.

The film IQ of this board has dropped to pathetic. There is absolutely NO reason that /v/ and /co/ can both come in here and not find any movie they haven't already seen. There is no reason that /pol/tards should be able to blend in despite being film illiterate.

If any of us went into /mu/ or /lit/, we'd be fucking lost. But this board is so fucking entry level kiddie pool that it may as well be an afterschool movie club.

This, Mad Max wasn't just a dumb flick, it actually had politicial and social discourse right through it especially on feminism.

A flick would be capeshit, star wars, Star Trek and the like, completely shallow turn your brain off films.

flick - surface level entertainment, designed for consumption by the masses (see: money) and to be FUN. any themes are almost always shallow surface level and 1 dimensional, and only service the narrative, being almost inconsequential

movie - anything that falls between a flick and a film. usually a movie is a little deeper and the ideas and themes are a bit more definitive. however this is usually a result of first world problems, societal impositions, someone getting wronged or being placed into an unfortunate situation, etc.

film - takes a more philosophical approach and focuses more on the human condition and meaning, or finding a more fundamental inner truth, regardless of any cultural or societal norms or expectations. when done well, the themes/ideas and narrative serve each other, two way street, but at times the narrative takes a backseat and only serves as an example to highlight and serve the themes.

cinema - anything that would be impossible or lose a lot of it's artistic merits in another medium, and therefore needs to be on a screen. a very subjective experience, and usually narrative is abandoned or specifically inconsequential. this is why 2001 doesn't quite work the same way as a book.. it kind of puts a specific definition and explains too much when really there's a need for it to be open-ended and ill-defined. same thing goes for most (but not all) of tarkovskys works; would you read a novelization of the mirror? how can that even be done? the medium and it's possibilities are what's important here, usually pertaining to its ability to make a certain ill-defined style of beauty feel almost (but not quite) tangible, which simply wouldn't work in a play or a book or if done with the intent of entertainment.

before you ask, yes, some works can operate effectively on different levels. when you understand the categorization you'll see that it's not necessarily exclusive, but usually (not always) one stands taller
>>
>>64066001
A lot of action movies would really only function as cinema since no other medium could capture the beauty of combat. Think about the fights in Ip Man, John Wick, or The Raid, they don't work outside of film.
