Could Dune be faithfully adapted into a single two-to-three hour Hollywood-style movie?
>>
>>64047555
Only if they add blacks, strong womyn, and gay
>>
>>64047603
they don't need to, dune is allahu akbar enough
>>
probably not, sorry bro. a few of my favorites don't work (and thankfully most haven't been tried) so i kinda know that feel
>>
No. It's a miracle that Dune even worked as a novel. Combining space feudalism with space capitalism and space jihad was a wacky idea. The serialized chapters made the novel a disjointed work that still managed to come through as entertaining.

No Dune was absolute shit. Mathew Brodericks worst movie by far

are there any other styles?

Jodo style
>>
Is it possible to faithfully adapt Dune? Yes.

Is it possible to faithfully adapt Dune in the current Hollywood climate? No.
>>
>>64048842
What the actual fuck? is that from the Dune documentary? i need to watch it righ away.

>>
>>64047555
Fuck you man, don't even put that out there.
>>
>>64047734
It didn't work as a novel. It was just marginally les terrible than the rest of the uniformly awful scifi genre
>>
>>64047555
david lynch already did it senpai
>>
>>64048974
It's a promotional video for The Dance of Reality. He says he is naked, both his body and his soul, stripped from all the prejudice and stuff to invite you wholeheartly to watch his film.
>>
so many ideas have been borrowed from it wholesale, that like John Carter it would seem derivative today. the should just jump straight to god emperor
>>
Dune is like Game of Thrones mixed with Warhammer 40K.
>>
If they wanted to try, they'd have to involve Brian and he's like King Midas except everything he touches turns to a pile of shit.
>>
>>64051176
No it's fucking not. Holy shit.
>>
>>64051449

it is literally exactly like both of those things

it's like star wars, if star wars featured a sand planet in it, which it of course does not
>>
Dune is like League of Legends mixed with Jurassic World
>>
>>64048842
What the fuck, I watched the documentary and I don't remember this. I think I would've remembered.
>>
>>64047555
Yes, but Hollywood either doesn't know how or isn't willing to take the risk.

Dune mostly involves ingesting spice to induce visions of the distant future. There is also philosophy, ecology, and speculative future politics and religion.
Game of Thrones and Warhammer 40K mostly involve pushing edgy grimdark torture porn to the detriment of actual storytelling and depth.
>>
>>64047555
Yeah, the first one at least. I don't know why people pretend like it'd be so hard to adapt.

But it'd be less of a Gaurdians of the Galaxy/Star Wars movie and more of a Gladiator kind of movie. It'd be hollywood-ized, but it wouldn't be exactly be fun for the whole family.
>>
you cant faithfully adapt a novel into a film or tv series

it just doesnt work, the best you can hope for is a loose adaptation

when will the plebs of /tv/ ever understand this?
>>
>>64047555
No.

It would come across like "Star Wars Episode 1" with lots of time spent on discussing trade, treaties, and politics and shit.

It would bore the fuck out of the audience.

Lynch was right to cut out the bullshit.

No literally unfilmable as a movie

>Far too much reliance on internal monologues, which don't work well when used heavily in movies
>Too many character perspectives that are critical to understanding the plot.
>The world is too rich and with too many hard to explain concepts. No way you can make sense of it in a 2-3 hour movie

It could work as a very well made mini-series, but not as a film. There is just too much there.
>>
Audiences found the bare bones space politics of phantom menace confusing.

Imagine them trying to wrap their head around dune.
>>
>>64047603
Fremen are descendants of middle eastern Jews. Considering this is 10000 years in the future a lot of different races would make sense.

Strong women were already part of the story (gene besseret)

Baron Harkonnen is gay, but this was written in to make him more hedonistic
>>
>>64047603
>>64047627
fucking lel
>>
>>64052292
It's not too confusing. There are the great houses of the Landsraad, and a bad house attacks the good house. They get away with it because they're in league with the imperium. Paul seeks justice
That's all that really needs to be understood for the first book.
>>
>>64047555
SO AS LONG AS JAR JAR STAYS AWAY FROM DUNE THEN MAY I SUGGEST, DAVID LYNCH. HIS 1984 VERSION, though OKAY, is still infinitely more awesome than MARY SUE REY AWAKENS!
>>
>>64047923
Nah, it was a good adaptation. Problem was the budget and what little they had they blew on CG worms.

>dat feel when limited budget lead to them casting actors clearly from central and eastern Europe
>their varied accents somehow help in making setting of Dune a truly galaxy-spanning empire where people have varied cultures
>>
>>64052660
Duncan Idaho (the series' protagonist) is comically homophobic, though. He tries to stab a guy he's sworn to protect just because he was triggered by some lesbians.
>>
Yes

Its ultimately a story about a backwards culture being much stronger than the powers that be realize.

Theres a ton of backstory and fancy shit, but the core story could be reigned in enough to make sense of it.

>Duke is overthrown by a conspiracy
>Duke's son escapes into the desert
>powers-that-be ignore the desert and its people
>Duke Son uses pre-planted myth to take up the messiah mantle of the Fremen
>trains himself and the Fremen with "normal" combat experience/Bene Gesserit shit
>figures out what REALLY controls society (melange) and realizes he can exploit it
>utterly annihilates his enemies underneath a massive sandstorm
>demands the throne, threatening to destroy all civilization (melange)
>outplays everyone and becomes emperor

Theres a lot of shit in the original book but it distills down into a pretty simple heroes journey story. You could have a lot of the crazier, weirder shit as background stuff, you dont have to like spend 3 hours detailing the Bene Gesserit breeding program.
>>
There will never be a proper adaptation of Dune because the heroes of the story are basically Space Muslims and they shit ain't gonna fly in this political climate.
>>
>>64052188
Atlas Shrugged got adapted so anything's possible. Dune movie just couldn't be your typical "action movie in space" kind of deal which pretty much cuts out any real funding it might have.
>>
>>64052906

Space Muslims/Jews/Christians it doesnt really matter anyways. Theyre 10,000 years removed from current shenanigans.
>>
>>64052925

Of course it could be, It has like 5 or 6 battles between Sardauker and Fremen with crazy melee combat AND Sandworms.

The spectacle of Sandworm alone are enough to be like "yo damn."
>>
>>64052906
Heroic muslims fits perfectly into today's political climate.
It's exactly what socjus hollywood wants.

>>64052890
There's no way you'd fit all that into a single movie, though. Fall of House Atreides would probably be a good ending for the first movie and then deal with the whole Fremen uprising in the second one.
>>
>>64053045
just what we need, more propaganda for isis about how amazing it is to live with muslims and jihad against the evil wealthy imperialists
>>
>>64050645
guys, you know how i knew this one was a raging homosexual.
>>
>>64047923
You are not alone in this world anon. I like every adaptation of DUNE.
>>
>>64052890
>You could have a lot of the crazier, weirder shit as background stuff, you dont have to like spend 3 hours detailing the Bene Gesserit breeding program.

But you do for later movies and overall Golden Path story. That's kinda the problem with Dune - it's dense, but in a meaningful way where things come back to be even more relevant.
>>
>>64053064

I think you could, you have Paul and Jessica in the desert in the first 30 minutes and the rest works itself all out.

Gloss over:

>Reverend Mother Mohaim
>Count Fenring
>Hawat/Jessica rivalry
>Piter
>Caladan
>Shadout Mapes

You only have to set up a few things in Act 1:
>Everyone is the Spacing Guilds bitch, even the Emperor
>The Fremen are unknown but weird/badass as fuck
>Atreides/Harkonnen Rivalry
>Paul's absurd amount of training
>Bene Gesserit Myth Spreading and Breeding Program
>>
>>64053135

Well we're trying to pitch just the first movie. Itd be impossible to get financing to make like SIX movies in an IP where the last one they made bombed.
>>
>>64050645
Them's fighting words, my man.
>>
>>64053135
>later movies

> into a single two-to-three hour Hollywood-style movie

Are you a retard?
>>
>>64052884
>Duncan Idaho (the series' protagonist)
Triggered.
>implying anything after God Emperor is relevant
>>
>>64053248
If you gloss over Caladan then the entire move is desert, desert, and more desert. You need that lush tropical planet first to contrast the dry and dead desert of Arrakis
>>
Lynch's Dune was faithful tho
>>
>>64053639
That bit was from God Emperor though.
Duncan is the only character to appear in every book at that point.
>>
>>64053807
That doesn't mean he's the protagonist.
>>
>>64053779

>weirding module

Yea no

Who would you want to see play Princess Irulan?
>>
>>64053840
He's the closest thing to a series protagonist. He plays a major role in every book except the first one.
His character is pretty dull though, except as Hayt.
>>
>>64054148
Britt Robertson
or maybe Teresa Palmer
or Emily Kinney
>>
>>64052136
>It would come across like "Star Wars Episode 1" with lots of time spent on discussing trade, treaties, and politics and shit.

if the right director would set up the big banquet from the first book that would be awesome as fuck. but that director would need to transfer spoken language, inner monologue and secret language into something the average movie goer would understand(why are the guards changing postions now? did paul say something to trigger that?)
>>
>>64052709
>bad house attacks the good house
the good house brings more destruction to the universe than the bad ever could..... for the greater good
