a great deal of the other movies is dedicated to both skywalkers training extensively. ren has been trained in the force, is leader of a deadly group, and is beaten by a girl who uses a lightsaber against him for the first time
she is also inexplicably able to perform jedi mind tricks without any practice. forget that previously we only see masters perform them, not long before this point she thought jedi were a myth entirely. she has certainly never seen a jedi mind trick, how does she even know it is a thing?
and how does it make sense that this girl goes to luke for training? luke already trained kylo ren, who then left and received additional training in the dark side (which is how vader was so powerful). she is already more powerful than a guy who knows more than luke can teach
the power level of characters was pretty fucked considering the dedication the other movies had to creating a sense of time in training exercises, but on the other hand, maybe Ren is just supposed to suck

Kylo Ren has constant autistic tantrums and can't kill anything that isn't unarmed and standing still.
Phasma does absolutely nothing and can be intimidated into lowering Starkiller Base's shields in an instant. She HAS to know she's the most valuable person in the room once they've captured her. She can lower the shields. They can't, and it's a fair bet very few people on the base can. She's irreplaceable. She could at least TRY to resist them for a minute or two.
Hux always looks like he's desperately trying to hold his bowels until he can get to a bathroom and never does anything of note other than give one speech. Even Tarkin was at least shown giving people orders and shit. Tarkin had a commanding presence. Hux has nothing.
And last but not least, we have Mr. Do-nothing Hologram, who can barely be bothered to be in the movie. Hey kids, try this: you too can simulate the amazing experience of encountering Supreme Leader Snoke by graffiti-ing angry eyebrows on the Lincoln Memorial!
