If it was cannon, Disney probably wouldn't be owning Star Wars. Star Wars is first and foremost a family movie because of the merchandising sales.
I don't know why people don't understand that: Star Wars was going to be so much darker, but the toys were selling and Lucas decided to keep the gravy train rolling. Han was going to die in the Original Trilogy. Luke was going to be seduced by the Dark Side. There never was going to be a Christmas special. There never was going to be a Jar Jar.
I'm not saying don't enjoy the EU, but realize it is all fanfiction. Very well written fanfiction, but fanfiction and non-cannon nonetheless.

There was always a huge debate on what was canon and what wasn't. Always. It was always because of Lucas' greedy money grabbing. Internally, there were people who said it was all canon, only this and that was canon, and none of it was canon.
If you want to be technical, none of this matters because it was stated explicitly sometime last year that virtually all of the EU wasn't canon. This whole conversation is irrelevant simply because of that fact.
That whole clusterfuck that is the EU both improved and ruined Star Wars. The way I always treated it was like a mod for video games: added a lot to the series, but was never canon at all.

And the best part is that I turned out to be on the winning side since day one. Never got my hopes up. Never felt betrayed by Lucas. AND I got to enjoy the EU for what it was. I don't have to struggle to come to terms with it not being canon. It doesn't make me lose a wink of sleep. I suggest you try it.
