Pretty shit. Keeps trying to shock the audience with shit the government is doing that should be complete common knowledge/expected. Actually succeeds in shocking the main character, who has a ridiculously naive worldview for a government agent.

Jamie Foxx is in consideration for being the most boring fucking actor on Earth.

He's been good in a couple things and honestly is fine in The Kingdom, but fucking shit I can't think of a single time he's given an above-average performance outside of Collateral.

Every time I see him in something now I usually think about much better Anthony Mackie would be in that role.

Theyre pretty realistic and every time big IRL mobsters are depicted theyre always shown as scared of American Federal agents while depicting their own police and military as easily bullied and bought. Emily blunts performance was fine, i felt like they wrought her as too simplistic and stupid, even with the cold reality of the world staring in her face and realizing what she got herself into she didn't even try to double down and join them instead she black listed herself from any future ops (and almost got herself killed 2-3 times?)

Apparently i have far too much faith human intelligence because Emily is suppose to be the stupid white/black morality character and infact probable hurts the viewers feelings when they realize they are just as fucking stupid as her.

Emily Blunt's entire character was meant to be an obnoxious hothead that demanded answers that she couldn't handle.

Everyone used everyone else in the entire film, except Blunt's character. She was an unwilling pawn of the CIA and Del Toro's character that wanted to get caught up in the game but ultimately couldn't handle it.

Also,

Blunt is the audience surrogate in the film

She represents the idealist side of law enforcement, you build a case through solid legal police work, follow the chain of command, trust your superiors and coworkers and nothing ends up happening. She is the leader of an FBI raid team so she is a level above what everyday cops experience and we as regular citizens are intimidated by them yet they wont pull their gun sometimes their entire careers. She does it every day. So when even she is flustered and incapable of handling what it really takes to make a significant difference in the drug war it gives you real perspective on just how brutal it is.

Colombian narco novelas are the best way better than the Sopranos or the wire. Suggest you watch El Cartel season 1 which is on a book written by an ex cartel member turned US protected witness. It will give you a way better perspective of how cartels really work. Its also subtitled and pretty funny in a raw violent tarantino movie kind of way with less blood of course

his character wasnt supposed to tell us anything, he was a tool for the CIA, a guy with talent and desire who doesnt care if he dies, he gets his revenge and the CIA get what they want, a destabilized cartel.

the real point is that you cant stop the drug trade but you can gain some semblance of control in exchange for compromising all morals, ethics, and law enforcement principals.

that is what blunts character struggles to comprehend

A WIDE RELEASE IS A MOVIE THAT HAS TO BE MARKETABLE ENOUGH TO RELEASE IN 2,000+ THEATERS FOR THE GOAL OF PROFIT

That the USA regularly aligns with horrible people they see as the lesser of 2 evils?

Or that the CIA would do things they arent supposed to?

Or specifically that a highly trained and experienced group of military type operators could take out some disposable cartel henchman?

Well, if he had been former law enforcement/military and working for a Cartel, many of those guys in that field went to The School Of The America's to learn how to kill commies.

Some of them ended up forming their own Cartels. Or were already working for anti-Commie drug runners anyway.

>>64039236

Basically talking (let alone yelling) when "on target" doesn't ever happen unless the place is secured, and "sweeping" is where they move their gun barrels across the path of another member in the team (which could lead to an accidental discharge and a friendly fire injury).

>>64039184

As said above, a lot of prosecutors/judges etc in places like Colombia or Brazil used to be in the military or police. So it's not a stretch to think Del Toro did some time in the police or army before becoming a prosecutor.

Also, as is the point of the film (and reality), even a "good" prosecutor like Del Toro is probably on the pay roll of a Cartel. In his case maybe a more orderly and co-operative Cartel. He could just be straight.

In the 80's, the "CIA" (probably different government agencies) trained a lot of Latin American military, police and also generally unpleasant people like certain co-operative Cartels (see this post >>64037316 about U.S. "friendly" drug kingpins like Noriega or Blandon - Noriega got out of line and the U.S. smashed him, Blandon's main street level connection in the U.S. "Freeway" Ricky Ross eventually got busted - Blandon gave up Cocaine smuggling to work for the DEA. As in with an office and desk, not a snitch. He was a "good" Cartel fella, because his Cocaine riches were being used to fund anti communist militias in Nicaragua) to Fight The Spread Of Communism. This led to a lot of disreputable behavior on the behalf of people working nominally for U.S. interests. Death Squads basically.

One such group were a bunch of Ex Mexican Special Forces who were trained in Georgia at the infamous School Of The America's, which gets called Dictator School and the like. They went to town killing commies, and when that work dried up, they went to work as muscle for a Cartel. Then they decided, hey...fuck it. We'll just run our OWN Cartel. They ended up as Los Zeta's. One of the more feared and grotesque Cartel groups.

The Nerd looks like he was based on /k/'s favorite operator.

>Mike Vining is a retired US Army Sergeant Major who joined the military in 1968. Until 1978, he served in several Explosive Ordonance Disposal units. He was deployed to vietnam for one year in 1970. In 1978, he volunteered to join the newly formed 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment – Delta (Airborne).

>During his service in the Special Forces, Vining participated in several big operations. During the Operation Eagle Claw, he survived a plane crash.

>In 1983, he was deployed during Operation Urgent Fury. During Operation Desert Storm, he was stationed in Ar’ar, Saudi Arabia, and in 1994 he was the Senior Enlisted Advisor for Joint Task Force 188 on the USS AMERICA during Operation Uphold Democracy.

Get some sort of political science/language degree, join Army, join Green Berets or Rangers, join Delta, get recruited for CIA.

Easy.

Overall I really liked it. The pacing is awkward at times, patchy during the beginning and a little slow during the middle, but the entire last act was gripping and enticing, and the scenes where the director is trying to make things tense are absolutely superb. The bridge crossing and the mansion scenes are the best in the film. It doesn't pussy out and give a 'happy' ending, it gives an ending that fits the film perfectly. Unfortunately despite Brolin's great performance his character seems played out, as do some of the other law enforcement people, but Blunt and del Toro's characters are great. Visually it's beautiful and it's themes are mature and interesting while still being accessible without falling into dumbness.

This.

Tension goes a long way for me and the visuals, coupled with that great score, created a constant air of engrossing dread throughout the film.
And I found that Brolin stole the show. Just blended in to the world perfectly.

My only complaint would be that Blunt's character didn't seem all that attached to what was going on around her, both by not knowing was what happening and having few good reasons to care. I understand the point and purpose of her character and Blunt did rather well with what she was given but she could have been a more well-rounded character.
