The whole binary sunset scene establishes Luke as wanting something greater in life, it makes sense for him to hone his abilities and become a Jedi Master. When he did he kept wanting to do something great so he went on to train the next generation of Jedi (and when that failed he was ashamed).
Leia had a lot of scenes in the OT, and hell even in 7 where she tried to establish herself as just as competent as anyone else and so she was comfortable not expanding her abilities. She made a fine tactician in the OT and continued in that line of work for however many years until Force Awakens, she probably felt she never needed to work on improving her force abilities.This is how it is in real life with men and women as well
