Even Death Star II is forgivable in that it's more background like in TFA than in ANH. It's just what gets the characters in place to have the ground assault battle and a jedi fight.

Yeah but changing Ewoks to Wookies wouldn't change anything about Han or Leia, the fight would basically play out the same. Leia should have been telling the ewoks/wookies when to spring their traps and shit, that would have been something.

The entire opening in Jabba's palace is fun and exciting. Luke's confrontation with Vader and the Emperor is exciting. The attack on the second Death Star is.... fine. Everyone loves the speeder bike chase. But after that, everything on Endor gets stupid. It's not unwatchable or anything, but it's fucking stupid.

Idk if that's a great defense. I don't hate the Ewoks, but they were probably a little too cutsie to have much longevity. I can see why people who like the adult aspects of SW would get turned off by the Ewoks. They're definitely one of the weaker parts of the OT. I don't think they're really any better than the Gungans, not that I don't agree that maybe they're both a bit over-hated.

there's always bitching about how the ewoks are shitty replacements for wookies on endor, but in my most recent viewing I think it works well as a story element. the ewoks are, true, a bit too childish in their general demenor, but the idea that the empire never anticipated a non technologically equivical opponent as a threat makes them fit into the story well. If they had been a bit more devilish or down right savage to the storm troopers i would have been happier. As it is they are a servicable ally in the series, and replacing them with big powerful wookies sounds better as a concept, and just a concept. We'd still be stuck with the same issue today.
The real downer is the reliance on Death Star II, as an empirial trump card, which is unnecessary. I Personally love the original concept of Luke going to Corasant with Vader, and seeing that the entire planet, more than just being repressed, is actually being slowly killed by the Emperor's presence. Then Luke and Vader go to some lava throne room and fight in front of the emperor.

I'm with RotJ until Ewoks successfully mount an attack on the base that's secured by a dozen Stormtrooper units and a handful of walkers.

Lukes funeral for Vader is the definative end for the Star Wars saga.
One of my favorite scenes of all time. Its very emotional to me, still to this day.

There were delays filming which caused it to go after budget and he had to go to Fox and ask them for more money
Kirshner was the compliant proxy-director he could just boss around
He fell out with Kurtz over these matters and Kurtz demanding effects shot be redone - Lucas believes in 'good enough'
Then Raiders of the Lost Ark came out
Lucas came to the conclusion that the audience were more interested in the roller coaster ride
So Lucas gave up on the bigger broader plans and decided on the quick conclusion.
He recycled the Death Star from New Hope and the three way primitive planetary battle/space battle/duel of the Original Star Wars drafts (that would later be recycled again for Phantom Menace when those Original drafts were turned into Phantom)
Richard Marquand was a proxy yes-man, Lucas could call him up in the morning and discuss the days shooting and what he was to do and how and then at the end of the day call him up and discuss how it went and the next days work
