I was born in 1995, I'm 20 now.

I was literally 4 years old when the phantom menace came out. I grew up on the prequels. The prequels defined my generation. I had tons of friends into it, I had tons of toys, played the video games (Episode I racer, X-Wing, Battlefront, Republic Commando), went to Star Wars themed birthday parties, etc... an experience that I'll absolutely never forget.

The prequels are comfy as fuck. Fun storytelling, awesome worlds, great characters, awesome action, and meaningful moments. True Star Wars.

I noticed that before 2009, a lot of people liked the prequels. Many were disappointed, but few outright hated them, and like I said, A LOT of people were willing to say they liked them. A thread like this couldn't exist today:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.72432-Am-I-the-only-SW-prequels-fan

Ever since Plinky the fat fuck made his reviews, Redditors have constantly linked to them, as if "Another guy said these movies suck so they suck!!!1111 I can't form my own opinions lol11!" He nitpicks the movies so much, his fans don't realize that you can nitpick ANY good movie to that level and it'll look bad.

nigger literally none of what you said about the prequels is right. call me fucking reddit, it doesn't nullify the fact that they were written terribly and the cgi has aged horribly. fuck off with this hipster prequel love bullshit
>>
>>64024164
The sequels were made for kids, they kids loved them, and now as adults they are defending them.

Wildly successful films, no other way to put it.
>>
1995-born 20 year old here

You are absolutely allowed to like them and no one should tell you otherwise, but the prequels really are unintelligible schlock written by a man who is not a writer, and who has a remarkable affinity for special effects.

They're bad movies. They're not good. In fact, they're irredeemably terrible. The best thing that can be said about them is that they made strides in special effects and had some good art direction. But because George had such a fixation on making 90% of the films CG, they have aged like milk even in this regard, and they really have nothing going for them.

I'm not a redditor, a RLM parrot, etc. I have a fair amount of nostalgia for the zeitgeist of those movies as we did grow up on them. But no.
>>
>>64024133
I was 9 for TPM. Luckily my dad showed us the OT in '95 and I probably watched those tapes hundreds of times from '95-'99. I miss having my dad tell me Anakin's story before we got the prequels.
>>
If there's one thing I truly enjoyed about the prequels, it was the Clone Troopers. Those armor designs were badass and they were actually good soldiers instead of the Stormtroopers.
>>
>>64023893
i was 3 i grew up with it too and hadn't see them since recently but bro you got to admit they were fucking awful
watch them again and tell me with a straight face that your not blinded by nostalgia
>>
>>64023998
I was 9 and thought Phantom Menace was boring as fuck besides Liam Neeson's scenes and the Darth Maul duel.
>>
>>64023893
I was born in 1990 and was 'supposed' to grow up on the prequels. But in actual fact I didn't watch any star wars movies until my late teens, a good number of years after Revenge of the Sith. so I was able to look at the Star Wars saga with unbiased objectivity. I can safely say that the OT is the core of Star Wars and are genuinely good films in their own right, space opera or not. But the prequels fail as films. They fail to tell a compelling story. They fail to tune an audience into the emotional highs and lows that such a script is asking for. I mean they have visual variety and add a good musical vocabulary to the soundtrack, but they are just a complete waste of time if you are trying to get an actual storytelling experience out of them. The only 'comfy' thing about them is the visual design, essentially the window dressing for a hollow series of films.

That being said, not everything about the OT is all that and a bag of chips. A lot of 'fans' will be glib in telling you that ESB is the best Star Wars film, despite them not recognizing that aside from the memorable parts of that movie it actually is quite lopsided story-wise and unremarkable as an overall film, ROTJ even more so. Add to the fact that ESB is not self contained, ending on cliffhanger sequel bait. ANH is possibly the best OT film as it's the classic Hero's Journey. And TFA is the best Star Wars film, since it 'Terminator 2's ANH - a more kinetic, bigger better version in every way to the original.

TLDR: My opinion is the only correct one ITT.

The prequels were always regarded as trash, you and your millenial fagboi friends have no fucking taste. I was old enough to actually remember episode 1 coming out. EVERYBODY hated jar jar bynx. When episode 2 came out I was blown away at what a terrible actor hayden christiansen was, and the fight choreography was non existent. Sam jackson has said that they just told him to flail around in front of a greenscreen and then CGI'd stuff around him after the fact. It was so bad I've still never even seen Episode 3. The prequels were a joke, the only reason I went to see the new one is because George Lucas finally gave up control of the franchise.
>>
>not old enough to remember the initial reaction
Fuck off. We hated it then. Coming out of TPM menace everyone looked dazed and just said, "I think I need to see it again, something's wrong here." George Lucas was driven off of the internet by the prequel hate long before the plinkett reviews. They're just not good. They have their moments and I'm sure people who were kids have fond memories of that time, but they just sucked.

Before 2009 the prequels weren't even made. Stop making this thread every day. The prequels were garbage and I was a child when they came out, but I wasn't an idiot who couldn't see that they flew too far from the source material and what made their namesake so popular. They were a simple cash in.

1991 birthday reporting in. I'm in the same boat as >>64024513 I grew up with the OT - my grandpa had the original, unadulterated movies on VHS. I watched them over and over - they and Disney were the ultimate comfy movies.

I was definitely excited when TPM came out, but when I watched it, it didn't click with me the same way the OT did - the same happened with the other two prequels. There were definitely things I liked in them (podracing, clone troopers, underwater cities, etc.) but there were a lot of parts I just found boring.

Hating the prequels isn't just a meme that began with RLM. Even before the trilogy was finished everyone was making fun of the extended senate debates and wishing death on Jar Jar Binks. The Plinkett reviews merely crystallized around people's disappointment in the movies and gave it form - they didn't just create it. I can't say I hate the prequels, but I can't consider them good films or a good part of the Star Wars saga.

George it's a writer. He's actually a shitty director but a fantastic producer. What was wrong with the prequels is he had entire executive control and he has the personality of an entitled child. People say everyone was afraid to question him, but the truth is he wouldn't have cared.
The original script for ANH was heavily altered from his original vision, but only after the studio forced actual talent in.

Likewise.
I think my favorite thing about the prequels is that they actually showed the war aspect of Star Wars. The originals and even Force Awakens lack in impressive battle scenes, the originals only having Hoth and Endor. The prequels felt like WW2 in space, and the battles were just on a much more massive and impressive scale.
I think the OT had a better story, but the PT had the better universe and world building, which can do a lot more to spark a kid's imagination.
Phantom Menace is my second favorite Star Wars movie, fuck you guys
