Wtf? There's loads better starting points. Cheaper ones too.

>I thought people didn't like River in here?

>/who/ isn't an amorphous blob.

>>
>>64001383
>Because that would be the first Big Finish experience I'll have.

m8 start with the classics or 8s run

Protip for a speedy and enjoyable run of 8

Storm Warning > The Chimes of Midnight > Seasons of Fear > Neverland > Zagreus > Scherzo > The Natural History of Fear > The Next Life > Terror Firma > Other Lives > Absolution > The Girl Who Never Was
>>
>>64001432
The Classic Doctor's aren't interesting to me and I don't really care about the Time War. It's either gonna be River or Ten/Donna.

I always read she's an ugly talentless bitch.
>>
From what I've heard about the Christmas Special, it'll basically be a pantomime. Fun to watch once, when you're drunk off your arse. Probably never again.

That said, from what I've seen in trailers, it's the kind of thing that'd make me want to bash my head against the wall repeatedly. Can we not have the jealous lover thing? Even as a joke it makes me want to gouge my eyes out.
>>
>>64001469
Well yeah I'll probably do that.

>>64001475
Like I said I don't particularly find the classic Doctors interesting. I also haven't seen any Classic episode except Hartnell's first three seasons but I got bored.
>>
>>64001494
>>64001534
Wait, are you calling 8 a classic doctor? Uhh....
>>
>>64001534

Don't start with Hartnell.

Watch Spearhead from Space, The Ark in Space or Remembrance of the Daleks to start you off.
>>
>>64001534
>Like I said I don't particularly find the classic Doctors interesting. I also haven't seen any Classic episode except Hartnell's first three seasons but I got bored.

Eight isn't a classic doctor and you don't have to have watched ANY episode of Doctor Who to enjoy his run. My

Storm Warning > The Chimes of Midnight > Seasons of Fear > Neverland > Zagreus > Scherzo > The Natural History of Fear > The Next Life > Terror Firma > Other Lives > Absolution > The Girl Who Never Was

list is a perfectly enjoyable run that requires no preexisting knowledge.

Eight has no limits as he only had one short strange apperance in the 90s (that you dont have to have watched) and then his minisode in the New Series (which u dont have to have watched)
>>
>>64001494
>>64001534

Nothing wrong with not finding the classic Doctors interesting, but FYI McGann isn't really a classic doctor. His entire run is basically Big Finish. It's its own thing, unconnected to any TV stuff. It's self-contained.

Also his stuff isn't connected to the Time War. Well his very latest stories vaugely, but that Storm Warning onward list an anon recommended to you takes place aaages before the Time War.

Have you watched Torchwood? Those audios are pretty good.
>>
is the christmas special gonna be the second worst S9 episode? it will be better than sleep no more for sure but I don't see it being better than anything else
>>
>>64002033

is the idea you're talking about found footage or eye booger monsters that are made up of biological cameras that interact with wifi?
>>
>>64002114
>they're not usually part of the series arc but from an objective categorisation standpoint they are always a part of a series

...you're literally wrong. Look at the production blocks. Look at the BBC's internal categorisation system.

>>64002173
By that logic, isn't all of Doctor Who just one long series? The Impossible Astronaut connects with concepts in The Big Bang but it's its own series.

A series is a set of episodes produced as a set of episodes to be released over a consecutive period of time. Christmas specials are SPECIALS. Not christmas episodes, SPECIALS.
>>
>>64002234
It's the idea to make found footage the monster. And have events be manufactured by chief science man.

Eye boogers were stupid, but not crucial for the plot, they could be excised and I'm not sure we are meant to even take them at face value.

Biological cameras are OK, although unnecessary. They have to transmit somehow, although I don't think writers have a good idea what Wi-Fi is.
>>
>>64002285
>although I don't think writers have a good idea what Wi-Fi is.

I've lost count of how many times they've used wifi for scifi bullshit
there's at least Bells where people could be sucked up and digitised by wifi signals, and then 100 years in the future they were using wifi in the underwater mining base which the doctor connected to with sonic sunglasses

I figure they think it just means "wireless network over radio"? I guess we can be lenient the same way we can forgive some kind of story using Internet to describe alien network.
>>
>>64002440
Why is the Doctor parked on Trap Street again
>>
>>64002486

Because they couldn't afford to make another set
>>
>>64002328
I think in that case we're supposed to accept that what they're using is nowhere near actual wi-fi, but they still call it that, much in the same way we still say "hang up" when we're talking about cell phone calls, or we use a floppy disk as a save icon.

Wireless network standards were basically all over the place until Wi-Fi came around, so I suspect it, like USB, is going to be one of the literally iconic designs/concepts of our generation of computing.

Nah, it doesn't get completely brushed off, it gets repeatedly brought up to subvert audience expectations about how the program would treat her race in segments set in the past. Which is interesting, but then Human Nature comes in and just nails a dramatically and comedically satisfying portrayal of race relations in 1910s Britain, without getting overly preachy or horrifying, and without also getting too cutesy and safe.

I find it interesting that the closer to her own time that Martha gets, the more likely she is to "get carted off as a slave". She also had to take care of the Doctor in 1969, as you remember.

In general I get the impression RTD and Moff haven't heard much of Big Finish past 2005ish. They both seem to have strong familiarity with pre2005 stuff, and I'm nearly certain Moff has heard Dark Eyes 1 at least, but yeah.

Moff does have to sign off when Big Finish want to explicitly use New Series stuff though so I'm sure he's at the very least somewhat aware of what they're doing these days.

The War Doc audios aren't fantastic. They're a bit of a waste actually. I honestly enjoyed UNIT Extinction more. Definitely have a listen though if you're interested in the War Doc.
They probably moved River up because they weren't aware she was in the Christmas special when they wrote it and set a date, and they only just thought of changing the date to maximise sales just now.

Osgood came out oddly dissonant from TV series.
>>
>>64004268
I just found it generally enjoyable. The War Doctor audios actively frustrated me.

Osgood was pre 50th, actually earlier than we've ever seen her (since Extinction is post Power of Three, pre50th...don't think too hard about the actual date) so I didn't mind that.

The Torchwood audios are my fav current BF though; they're legit really good.

I guess we agree to disagree then anon :) The Innocent was alright, but The Thousand Worlds was utter sci-fi rubbish (wasting Sir John Hurt on lamely declaring nonsense about "the Null Zone" is an utter travesty) and The Heart of the Battle did little with it's semi-interesting ideas.

Wasting John Hurt on endless juice drinking scenes and sci-fi mumbo jumbo legit saddened me. He's a tremendous actor and should have been used to dive into the morality, contradictory nature, etc - all the actual interesting stuff - of the War Doctor. He was less war-y than 6, 7 and 10, which is just baffling. Why even have this character if he's just going to be treated like 9 but without the sass and just snapping when people call him Doctor. Really disappointed with the boxset.
>>
>>64004376
>Osgood was pre 50th, actually earlier than we've ever seen her (since Extinction is post Power of Three, pre50th...don't think too hard about the actual date) so I didn't mind that.
I find it odd that she's suddenly some kind of lead scientist in charge of devewloping weapon and such. It didn't seem to match her TV portrayal (Although TV portrayal is completely unclear what was her job supposed to be)
>>
>>64004376
Boxset 2 sounds infinitely better desu, also different writers
>>
>>64004185
Oh right, the anon who's grandfather could possibly be his father, good times. If she had tried it later I might have been more keen, but I was honestly oblivious to the fairer sex until I was damn near 20. In hindsight that stuff is weirder than at the time when I was probably focused on showing her my heavy shelves filled with star trek books.
>>64004202
See, maybe I'm weird but I have little to no interest in the UNIT ones whatsoever. Too many "Good Lord"s perhaps. I kind of feel like i need more stories of the war doc, if anything to justify his existence and have him not be a mayfly incarnation kind of like mcgann being nearly exclusively an audio doctor. It helps I've always liked hurt too.
>>
>>64004433
Near as I can figure, the setup is that Kate has the Doctor's old job title, but is in charge of both a whole team that does what he used to do by himself, and the actual military part of the England, um, unit of UNIT. So, Osgood, Malcolm, Jac, plus the dude from the 50th, all basically serve as surrogate Doctors in terms of technical skills, under Kate who serves as the Doctor and the Brigadier in one post.

"Science Leads" they say, but they don't say where it leads.
>>
>>64004443

I agree, but I'm still worried about them not utilising the War Doctor's unique potential. Not giving him an alternate name like "The Warrior" was also really dumb.

>>64004433
I imagine she's just a general scientist Kate particularly likes who Kate just assigns to projects, or who even chooses her own? She doesn't seem low-ranking so much as low self-esteem. Remember that the first time we see her she's striding out with the head of UNIT.
>>
>>64004541
>See, maybe I'm weird but I have little to no interest in the UNIT ones whatsoever. Too many "Good Lord"s perhaps. The UNIT ones aren't super exciting or anything; they're just very competent Big Finish.

Yeah I was the same as you mate and expected great things of the War Doctor audio but I'm seriously telling you that you'll probably be disappointed. It's three stories. The first is okay, very slow but Hurt gets some good scenes. About a fifth of it is just him drinking juice though and learning random stuff about a shitty planet. Very little plot and very little character development; mostly just description but it's the premiere story so let's let that slide.

The second story is legitimately bad. I don't think anybody will defend it. It's all set-up for the third story and depicts the Daleks doing evil sci-fi stuff to an evil sci-fi location. Hurt gets absolutely 0 unique dialogue here. Any other Doctor could have done what he does or says what he says.

The third has some fascinating ideas but wastes them in a bizarre and dull plot. Hurt gets some good moments but they're extremely underplayed.

At the end of the day the crazy thing is THIS COULD HAVE BEEN ANY OTHER DOCTOR. The War Doctor is noticeably LESS manipulative than 7 or 11. LESS prickly than 9 or 8 on his bad days. LESS brutal than 12. Why on earth did he eschew his name if he was just going to be a slightly duller 9?

I love Hurt too mate and you should definitely listen to the audio if only to form your own opinion, but I would lower your expectations.

The Torchwood audios are much better and I'll always recommend them.
>>
Since we're talking audios we should say what our favourites are, what we've heard, etc.

I'll start. I have heard none of 5, 6 or 7 (I want to start but I hate how I can't get a get order of how to listen to them, especially 7 who has big arcs). I plan to eventually try and sort out the order and start on 7, then 6, then 5.

I have heard all of 8ths monthlies, some of his random releases here and there (like the Mary Shelley stuff), and am currently working my way through the EDAs.

I have heard UNIT Extinction.

I have heard the Torchwood audios.

I have heard the War Doc audios.

I have heard UNIT Extinction.

That's it. I only started Big Finish this year but ADORED Eight's monthlies (well, some of them anyway!).

Let me refer you to a post I wrote a while back summarising how 7's arc works up to A Death In The Family (it ties in with 6 as well mind you).

http://archive.4plebs.org/tv/thread/60896707/#60898236

After you pass the material covered in this post, catching up on arcs becomes a very simple matter of just listening to the rest of 7/Ace's stuff in order. (In case you're unaware, for a few years now Big Finish Monthly Range releases for 5, 6 and 7 have followed a 'trilogy' format, where each Doctor gets 3 consecutive releases like a mini-season).

Good to know, thanks for the candor and sparing anything spoilery. The Time war probably plays out best in the written word and you're right it seems as though there's nothing really separating or THAT different than any other doctor, at least in DOTD and EOW. He in fact seems rather "chill" about the whole deal. My expectations of the war doctor audios are tempered by the fact that it's probably a comfy gig for Hurt. Nothing too taxing and a steady paycheck. He probably holds no affection for the material. That being said I'd expect the torchwood ones to be great. John and the woman that plays gwen seem to really love and enjoy their roles and John seems like he would have done anything to get back into into captain jacks shoes, among other things im sure. Also NEVAR FORGET

To add to this, 7 also has a smaller arc set at a different time to all the Ace and Hex stuff, concerning a character called Elizabeth Klein. This just comprises:

Colditz
-
A Thousand Tiny Wings
Klein's Story/Survival of the Fittest
The Architects of History

UNIT: Dominion

He was actually weirdly animated about it in the Behind the Scenes. I get the impression he quite likes being part of the legacy of the show and finds the whole experience rather enjoyable.

>That being said I'd expect the torchwood ones to be great. John and the woman that plays gwen seem to really love and enjoy their roles and John seems like he would have done anything to get back into into captain jacks shoes, among other things im sure.

Pretty much. You can seriously feel the joy coming off Jack, Gwen, Rhys, and Ianto as they perform. They really enjoy doing Torchwood.

It helps that the actual stories are real good too. I seriously feel like these Torchwood audios are going to grow to be some of the best Big Finish there is; having actors thrilled about the material is such an important bedrock.

RTD and Gary Russel actually planned out the official 'Series 5' of Torchwood as an audio only project a few years ago. Big Finish decided to hold off doing it until after at least 2 series' of Torchwood audio. But we eventually have a legit Series 5 to look forward to, so that should be great.

I think the Time War could work absolutely brilliantly in audio IMO, but Briggs just didn't manage it in this boxset. It was pretty unambitious. Dark Eyes was a better depiction.

To be more specific:

>Early work on the new series was carried out by former
Big Finish producer Gary Russell, working closely with
the series’ executive producers Russell T Davies and Julie
Gardner, before Gary’s busy schedule meant he had to
relinquish the task.

>Gary said: “Torchwood was something I thought had
a perfect home at Big Finish for years – luckily Russell
and Julie agreed and in 2013, the three of us started
talking about ways to make this happen. I believe Russell
said to BBC Worldwide he thought it should go ahead,
they contacted Big Finish who, at Russell’s suggestion,
conveniently came to me.

>“Russell and I began plotting ideas for what would have
been an audio season five, set post-Miracle Day, with some
new, some older characters and a new set-up back in Cardiff
(where I feel Torchwood absolutely belongs).

>“Then I moved to Australia and it became increasingly
difficult for me to run the series from 10,000 miles away.
Big Finish understandably wanted some product, so
myself and Scott Handcock devised the Dorian Gray-style
not-full-cast-but-not-straight-readings idea. Neither of us
were in a position to produce them, however. James Goss
was the obvious choice to do these. They could be set
during the first four seasons of Torchwood but not tread
on the toes of the still-planned season five.”

I fully expect the next UNIT set to be a second rate pastiche of the TV Silurian/Sea Devil stories with the male characters replaced by VERY badly written female characters
Osgood is 'generic supernerd', Kate is ' sardonic cardboard cutout' and the reporter McGee is 'generic comic relief'.

All original UNIT characters (original meaning created by Big Finish here, Kate and Osgood obviously already having been created) in the anthology are male. The main villain is also male. I have no idea where your crazy gender freakout came from - if your concern is over Kate and Osgood then you should direct that at The Power of Three and the 50th.

>does that not count or something

Correct. Because DWM isn't an official BBC production; I actually think it's owned be Marvel now. It's a commercial property of its own so it can do what it likes.

Official BBC properties are the show, the toys, the books (generally), etc.

Except for, you know - the best selling and most widely known superhero...ever.

Also you can't just "buy" Doctor Who. It's the BBC's. They're aware it can produce money and fulfil the mandate for a very long term, perhaps indefinitely.

Disney have no reason to offer the BBC a heap of money for it anyway. It's not going to happen; at least not for the next few years (something big would have to change on either the BBC or Disney's end).

David Yates did want to make a separate canon Doctor Who movie but Moff endlessly blocked it and made a big ten-year brand plan to the BBC to show why they'd never need it.

(Of course, BBC c_ucked up the marketing this year but Capaldi and Moff have made their displeasure at this widely known at the BBC and Series 10's soft reboot status will get a broad marketing campaign. If Jackson does the episode for Series 10 then you can bet that will be everywhere.)
