So, the Force Awakens was obviously better than the prequels.

But did anyone miss the world-building and feeling of "bigness" that the prequels had? Episode VII felt pretty small and there wasn't any sort of context given.

Why do people meme this so hard? The prequels were bad with a few silver linings. The only reason people don't like TFA here is contrarianism and meme-ing. You people are fucking autist shits.

>But did anyone miss the world-building and feeling of "bigness" that the prequels had?

A bit, but watching TCW greatly helped with that regard. 6 seasons of adventure on just about every planet, new or old.

TFA is so bad that people are actually reflecting on the prequels and realizing that they werent that bad.

Really the only thing they should've done in regards to world building is better explain the nature of the First Order, New Republic, and the Resistance.
>>
>>63994108
Episode VII had no world building.
You see, lucas drew from the monomyth, that's why his character arcs are structurally solid and he's on the spectrum, that's why he was very hands on about the world the movies are set in.
He had certain images in his head that wanted out, like the sunset on tatooine.
TFA is missing all this. It has no soul because JJ has no soul.
Star wars at it's crappiest was still a product of lucas' desire to create a world.
TFA is the product of a bunch of jews having a board meeting on how to scam the goyim.

Yes, a lot.

There were no memorable locations in TFA. A sin for a Star Wars movie.
>>
>>63994120

Fuck off.

>>63994108

The "world building" in the prequels was terrible. A bunch of interchangeable green screens and cartoon monsters with shit designs.

Force awakens is smaller in scale for the most part, but the locations/creatures/dwellings all feel real and lived in thanks to great set design and puppets.
>>
>>63994321

>>
>>63994350

People like you should be exterminated. There was no world building in the prequels beyond Ham fisted space politics and sets that were literally actors in front of a green scene. It was all cheap and lazy.

Best location was probably the the imperial fleet graveyard.
A crashed star destroyer was cool.

but beyond that, meh.
We got temperate forest and snowy forest.

Location wise I was looking forward the most to lake planet with the x wings, but the location wasn't that good in the movie.

If you use the word "contrarian," you're literally an idiot. It's a concept invented by idiots with reddit sensibilities who are too fragile to deal with criticism of mediocre media that has widespread appeal.

It's a troubling manifestation of millennials' mental weakness. Seriously, the only people who would even entertain any "argument" involving the concept of being "contrarian" are weak, lazy idiots who can't deal with criticism substantively.

If it bothers you that much that people criticize mediocre mass-marketed work designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator, like Star Wars, Breaking Bad, pop music, etc., you should find a safe bubble and stay there. Or kill yourself.

I'm rewatching the series before I saw TFA again and, honestly, Episode 2 and 3 are NOT that bad. And by "that bad" I mean the kind of bad that leads to long nitpicky videos by Internet autists and permanently damages George Lucas's reputation.

Yes, you have that god awful Anakin/Padme romance but it's fucking better than another God damn Death Star.

The prequels are comfy as fuck. Fun storytelling, awesome worlds, great characters, awesome action, and meaningful moments. True Star Wars.

I noticed that before 2009, a lot of people liked the prequels. Many were disappointed, but few outright hated them, and like I said, A LOT of people were willing to say they liked them. A thread like this couldn't exist today:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.72432-Am-I-the-only-SW-prequels-fan?page=3

Ever since Plinky the fat fuck made his reviews, Redditors have constantly linked to them, as if "Another guy said these movies suck so they suck!!!1111 I can't form my own opinions lol111!" He nitpicks the movies so much, his fans don't realize that you can nitpick ANY good movie to that level and it'll look bad.

What's up with all the planets being so close together? Seems like a child's perspective of a galaxy. Did they terraform a bunch of planets? Did they somehow move habitable planets to the same star system? Is this some Battlestar Galactica situation where there is an implied divine intervention of the formation of star systems (which I suppose would be some The Force thing)? When the starkiller was charging, why didn't the light shining on the planet disappear? Why did the baddies have a huge army of folks listening to the ginger speak, when they should have been guarding all the critical infrastructure of the weapon? I could think of new questions all night, but I need to go beddy byes.

I agree with OP. There is hardly any context for the scale of the organizations at play. We see snapshots of the power and influence of these people in specific locations of an entire galaxy. This movie is 2 hours and 15 minutes. I think almost everybody could stand another 5 minutes to provide some context for how these characters are operating in the galaxy, and it would explain some of the motivations. Maybe they're saving some of this stuff for the next movie, but I can't foresee any benefit for the dearth of "geopolitical" information in the first movie.

VII didn't have any time to establish real context for anything because of how much it emphasized stringing one action scene to another.

The giant death planet blew up the Republic and it's treated as something nearly peripheral. It was like the movie only cared to show it so as to justify destroying the big obligatory menace. I can't help but wonder if this influenced the direction of Rey's character as well. It feels as if she's hyper-competent simply as an excuse to be able to keep the film moving while still providing faux-tension. I'm sure the sequels will elaborate on this, but no matter what stupid explanation we get she's still a terrible, boring protagonist in a poorly paced mess of a movie.

The movie was still ultimately decent and better than the prequels in my opinion, but it does feel hollow.
>>
>>63995061
This is how people in the first world react to media. There's not much to feel strongly about so people will direct all of their strong opinions toward inane shit in the media and condemn others for negative traits they've projected onto them as a result of small disagreements. A lot of people in this thread would have over 90% of the population executed if it was up to them, and one of the criteria would be whether or not Kurt Russell is "fucking based 100 emoji 100 emoji 100 emoji."
