Holy crap this brought back some repressed memories. I never owned the trilogy on VHS but remember seeing them at blockbuster all the time.

1994 here. used to watch them all the time when i was 6 or so
>>
>>63987401

Still got them from when I was a kid. There's even a dried booger/snot on my Empire Strikes Back one because I watched it so many times.

Who here fast forwarded through the Leonard Maltin interviews before each movie? Who here loved the "one last time" preview before the movies started?
>>
>>63987401
Are these in widescreen or pan and scan? My gf's dad owns them but I've mostly just stuck to the despecialized, I might buy them from him because it'd be nice to physically own the original versions
>>
>>63987401
i have those originals on VHS, and I have the 1997 remastered versions on VHS with the later behind the scenes look at the Lars homestead (bought them in 2002)

my dad used to have the originals on laser disc too

Besides a token mention of a clone army and a barely noticeable voice over cameo from Ewan MacGregor, the prequels aren't mentioned at all.

It's a sequel to the original trilogy through and through, JJ and Kasdan have made their disdain for the prequels well known

ANH is well known for how good the editing was.

Marcia Lucas basically MADE the trench run. It was originally a boring sequence were Luke had two tries on the exhaust port. It had no tension, but she re-edited it into a single run where Luke blows up the Death Star seconds before it fired. She and her co-editors won an Oscar for their work.

When the fuck is Disney going to release the theatrical version of the original trilogy on blu ray?
It's been two fucking years and the demand is high.
>>
>>63988002
>Well, if there was a point to look at that signalled the "beginning of the end", this trailer for the last release of the original Star Wars Trilogy is it. It was digitally remastered in THX, and it's a promo at the beginning of the VHS tapes and Laserdiscs, that plainly states that this is the last chance to get the original films we all know and love. Before the Dark Times. Before the (un)special editions. Before the prequels. It does a good job of capturing the heart of how so many of us used to feel while experiencing it.

The physical distribution rights are fucked. 20th Century Fox owns the rights to the original film for eternity and the rights to the other 5 films until 2020.

We're not getting a blu ray release of the theatrical editions anytime soon, if ever. I'm sure it's a huge priority, though, because Disney just made a shitton on a great movie that was basically OT pandering.

>>
>>63988436
good points, but I suppose they wanted Hoth in the foreground and they thought Yoda would conflict as a backdrop.

I like the stormtrooper personally, I've always thought they were a great design

Spending the last 40 years of his life getting his asshole licked clean by absolutely everyone around him convinced him that he was never wrong. It wasn't until the internet (and social networks) becoming widespread that he realized that a great deal of his fans haven't liked his output since the 80s. I'm a little easier on the additions than most. I don't mind stuff like Ewoks blinking, or the full body shot of the Wampa, for example. Vader yelling at the end of Jedi, however, deeply offends me. It completely blows the tone and emotion of the scene.

Yes, but onlyafter years of pleading from the fans.
Also, they're in non-anamorphic widescreen, meaning they put it in a 4:3 picture and zoomed it out to keep the ratio intact, despite the fact that DVD could handle 16:9 easily. Plus the image has been hideously digitally filtered, leading to awful smearing on motion.

Vader has 12 minutes of screen time in ANH

That was true for earlier DeEd releases up to SW 2.5.

ESB 2.0 started using 35mm for entire scenes, RotJ 2.0 workprint also uses 35mm sources for shots that were removed in the SE (such as the original concert at Jabba's palace).

And all 3.0 versions will stick with HD sources. No more SD sources such as the GOUT.

Also, you're forgetting than when Harmy started with his Partly-Despecialized and then Despecialized 1.0, there were no fanmade film transfers such as negativeone's projects, and Mverta's restoration still was incomplete. Now even fans have direct access to Technicolor and low-fade LPP prints to transfer to digital with professional hardware. Heck, it's not even limited to Star Wars, they even transfered an 35mm Technicolor print of Song of the South.

I have TPM on VHS, but I haven't watched it. What all is different?
>>

And? The entire focus is on the idea of this samurai helmet wearing fuck trying to destroy/control the galaxy. He is the #1 villain of the film and antagonist.

Stop calling it A New Hope. Its Star Wars

1996 here, 90% of my childhood was VHS.
>>
>>63991060
It's been A New Hope ever since 1979 or 1980, probably before you were born. Fuck off.

Last VHS our family ever bought. I watched it once before the DVD player took the throne atop our TV.

no Tarkin is in control and it's Luke's movie

I own the DVD set with the originals from the laserdisc transfer. Better than nothing, and I got it before it spiked to obscene prices.

I've been watching them casually the last week, just checked on eBay. I didn't realize I had $150 sitting on my coffee table.

Mine are right beside me on the floor

Had no idea they were worth anything

I prefer the blu-rays

>Star Wars features prominent character Darth Vader
>Return of the Jedi features prominent character Yoda - prominent from another film
>The Empire Strikes Back features random mook
Fuck's sake.
>>

Vader does absolutely nothing in A New Hope, but give a personification of the Empire, and a literally faceless enemy for Luke to hate and (sort of) best in the end.

Empire Strikes Back has more to do with Vader than the Empire, since that is when we actually get any exposition on him. Everything that makes Vader Vader in A New Hope was the Empire, so if anywhere, the Stormtrooper should go there.

But of course, Yoda has little to do with Return of the Jedi, so it makes more sense to put Vader on that, since he actually goes through something there, as opposed to Yoda, who did everything he does of note, in Empire.

Hey Anon, what's the opening crawl for Star Wars say? Does it include A New Hope? Because if so it's not unaltered.
>>
>>63991413
yeah, best $15 I ever spent.

Crappy quality from the laser disc transfer, but man they are hard to find now.
>>
>>63991508
They specifically used those characters so they wouldn't need to pay any actors for their likenesses.

I still have this, with original box and manual. Worth ~$100

The game sucks

>don't ever, EVER throw away Star Wars crap

>>63991551
You might as well be bitching that none of the home releases have Aunt Beru's original actress' voice. There were tons of changes made between theatrical releases and then the home versions.
>>
>>63991531
So basically Vader should be on all 3 covers. Agreed.
>>
>>63991559
That's actually pretty genius.
>>
>>63991943
Well yeah, that too could work, but then it ruins the whole feel of the set.
That is, unless they just go with the original poster art, which technically had him on each of them anyway.
>>
My uncle has the OT on laser disc. At least I remember he had them when I was a kid. He's kind of aspie so I'm sure he still has them around.
