Honestly the only way they could have made him good was by giving him a little depth using his EU backstory about him taking on the name Grevious after his girlfriend got killed by giant bugs, then how he got turned into a cyborg tool and they modified his brain to wipe his memories.
He could talk about why he runs towards the end of his life in the 3rd movie, about how his memories of his woman are returning and doesn't want to live anymore, then attacking Obi-Wan and demanding that he give him a warrior's death so he can go to space lizard valhalla and bang his waifu again.
But that would have required him being around for more than half of one movie.
