The only innovative things about Avatar were technical. As a movie, it can't stand on its own two legs. As a cinematic experience, it was a fantastic first viewing. Beyond that, it was relatively mundane and you really felt the drag of the subpar story.
It really has some terrible, two-dimensional characters and ridiculous moments that defy belief: ie unobtanium.
