Why does Star Wars theme in TFA sounds like high school orchestra playing? That opening note is so campy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBeYD7yFWxE

Did Disney cheapened up on the size of orchestra?

I don't know if it was Disney's call. Williams is 83 years old and not in spry condition anymore.
>>
>>63980055
I like how Abrams mindlessly drooling over Williams scoring TFA in behind the scenes footage. Doesn't give any direction whatsoever, just sperging IT'S MASTER AT WORK, IT'S LIEK SO INCREDIBLE. Williams delivers the score without almost no leitmotifs, significantly worse than any other of the series, but Abrams doesn't even understand that. All that matter for him is that Williams worked on his movie.

>>

>>
>>63980055

ROTJ's piece has a more pronounced percussion, it's slightly different. The percussion really brings it home though.
>>
>>63980055
It's not a BAD score, it's just not as strong as his past SW scores. I think another big issue is that Abrams didn't construct the movie to leave room for great Williams compositions.

Say what you will about Lucas but even in the prequels he was good about leaving space for Williams to fill in the gaps with a great new theme. Abrams seemed like he was trying to make a movie that was so fast paced it didn't even NEED a score.

Also a bigger orchestra would have been nice.
>>
>>63981991
ROTJ's horns also have a deeper, fuller sound where TFA horns are baby fuccboi horns. The swing from the opening to the body of the theme is different. In ROTJ it's a bit more vivacious, TFA feels like it's about to become a waltz.
>>
John Williams didn't write it.

>>
>>63982223
This is the key. You barely notice the score in most of the film, so any theme development would be pointless.

Still, there are motifs there and a few developed themes, so maybe under a new director they will be developed more.

The end credits music was great.
>>
>>63983123
Yup. Just think of how The Imperial March was introduced in Empire. There's like a minute long scene of the Imperial fleet flying around which introduces the super star destroyer. Without the music it would be really slow but the music MAKES the scene.

There's a similar scene in Episode I where the droid army is going through the woods and into Naboo. It's just a bunch of shots of their tanks going into the city but Williams' score makes it work.

Lucas knew Star Wars wouldn't have been what it was without the amazing score and always made sure to leave room for it in his subsequent films. He would also ask John to write really bombastic and grandiose pieces. Somehow I get the feeling JJ just kinda let him do it without giving much direction for what kind of sound he wanted.

TFA is the first time I've seen a Star Wars movie and coming away with no memorable song, or really just a flat out forgettable soundtrack. >>
>>63981117
They sound completely different. Prequels were engineered to by extremely wide, bright and hyped. There's a reason to why they sound so fucking epic and awesome.

My educated guess is that the mixing engineers for TFA were asked to keep the new recording sounding "as similar as possible" to the score from the older movies.

Williams didn't know about that and kept the orchestration subdued, just like in the prequels (compare motifs from prequels and the original trilogy; prequels are based mostly on chords, while OT relies on melodies), which is an obvious route with arrangement when it comes to modern music production (in shortcut, less is more, less can be more forward, less can be easily made louder etc).

When you mix this kind of orchestration "naturally", as it was done in the earlier days, it just sounds unimpressive.

Honestly, Williams is the least responsible for this mess.

As others have noted, I think it may come down to the pacing of the film. If there's no long Star Destroyer shot, there's no imperial march. If there's no sunset scene, there's no sunset theme.

It's hard to argue that Williams is losing it. Methinks it was stylistically designed to be that way.

that's what I meant.

and plenty of force users didn't need some Jedi to teach them to how to use the Force.

the Force is a natural element of the Star Wars Universe, and a Force Sensitive can learn all by their selves, and that is basically how all the "orders" started anyways.

James horner was fucking great.

To be honest, the only composer I'm sick of now is hanz zimmer. Most of his tracks feel pretty samey now.

its why we call her a MaRey Sue.

Dat Emperor theme. Love how it is introduced as quiet creepy background music and becomes as overblown and powerful as The Imperial March by the end.

Also are those Darth Vader breathing sound effects I hear around 1:20?

mfw I realized they literally copied this scene in TFA where she watches the ship leave the planet. Except it's not half as cool as the binary sunset.

Truly the movie was a glib facsimile.

im with you. that sound track made Conan from a mostly good movie, to a work of art that has gotten shafted as a silly action movie as opposed to a near philosophical tolkien tier masterpiece that should be on more top 10 list.

yeah i said it. Conan 1982 is one of the greatest films ever made with no irony. Like near Ben Hur levels of good in its own way.

I believe she could become attuned to the force if she spent all those years meditating and communing with the force. Sadly she had only thought the force a myth the whole time and she was only introduced to it in a visceral way when she go to Maz's place. Then Maz talks to her for a few minutes and suddenly she can close her eyes and become a Jedi master.

I dont think the score was any more bland than any other of the Star Wars scores.

The problem is that there was no room for it in the movie. There were no spots where they established any themes for the characters or mood.

Remember that scene from A New Hope when Luke stares out into the sunset and this plays?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcZ9kQ1h-ZY

Can you remember any such moments in TFA?

And whenever they had space to any of that, they rushed through it.

Whenever there were any strong music on, it was mushed up in all the sound design and dialoge.

The sound mix on TFA was a fucking mess.
>>
>>63987221
now imagine the remixed version of this theme that they'll use for the final battle in ep9
going to be amazing

Replace Williams with Giacchino.
Star Trek 09 was on par with Williams's best work.

Anybody have the song that plays when Rey arrives to Luke's island? I only heard it the one time but I swear it was lifted straight from Assassin's Creed IV

Rey's theme, the Poe / Finn friendship theme, the Jedi Steps and Finale track were really great man..

here another sound track i think really got its tone down while sounding awesome as fuck.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vU7XqToZso

and regardless of what you think of the film, the score to Man of Steel was pretty awesome, even avoided Zimmer's rehash of gladiator thing he does.

John powell's How to Train Your Dragon Soundtrack is beyond Beautiful.

>>
>>63990247
That would be Jedi Steps and Finale.
>>
...I liked the Snoke theme. But it also sounded generic.
>>
>>63980055
It's the studio mixing.

The new theme puts more emphasis on the highs and the lows (listen for how much more the kettle drums and the triangle are pronounced in the newer version)
While the old theme is set on the "main brunt" of the theme, which makes it sound "bigger", but also makes it lose a little bit of its depth.
>>
>>63980055

TFA's literally sounds better
it's a neat punch that hits you hard

Jedi's opening beat is sloppy since the percussion comes in slightly earlier

Digital recordings tend to dial back on mid tones for highers highs and lows. You think it sounds good at first due to a better clarity but its actually shit in comparison because theres no balls behind it.
