the prequels started the "you have to be Jedi to be cool" thing, because they had no interesting non-jedi characters, who weren't evil.
Watch the Original Trilogy. You only have 3 jedi appear, one is old and stoic, one is old and eccentric, and the last is a naive young man lacking in self confidence for the majority of the Trilogy.
Han and Lando were the cool guy smugglers, with skills that could land them top positions in either the Empire or Rebellion. Leia was "get shit done" girl for the first movie. No force powers required.
All the hate that TFA gets, at the very least I'm glad they tried to focus more on that angle. It's supposed to kinda suck being a Jedi because if you don't stay devoted to the Light Side like Obi-wan and Yoda, you end up like Vader hurting everyone closest to you.

also, to answer your question I wouldn't give a fuck. My only issue with Finn is the ham-fisted love story that seems to be developing with him and Rey. Should have saved all that for movies 2 and 3. The relationship as a whole feels rushed.
Finn becoming a jedi would at least explain why he wasn't insta-killed by Ren at the end.

true it had no internal struggle (minus ren), but also the pace of the movie was to fast, everything was climactic or about to be climactic, there were barely enough moments of getting to know chracter just being themselves isolated, everything was were gunna die/funnyjoke were gunna die/someone dies
