I would have never seen the original cut which ran for all those useless hours. I saw the pre-Criterion DVD cut and it was pretty bad though. I've heard the one Criterion put out last year isn't bad but I don't really care enough to revisit the film.

Mel Gibson
>bisexual Christian artist living in soviet union
>has the most fucked up hair
>makes his first film, it gets lost
>forced to make propaganda films
>makes two propaganda masterpieces
>James Joyce himself proposes Eisenstein adapt the author's hugely influential modernist novel Ulysses
>he never gets a chance
>starts working on a structural masterpiece, October
>forced to put it on hold for The General Line, a propaganda piece to celebrate Trotsky's collectivized farms
>by the time he finishes The General Line Trotsky is no longer a hero and thus the film is reedited in order not to honor him
>Eisenstein finishes October - it is a masterpiece, the film is considered too confusing and bourgeois and is reedited to remove all reference to the recently purged Trotsky
>begins next film, Bezhin Lug
>considered "profoundly hostile to socialism" and production is stopped, reels are eventually destroyed
>next film Alexander Nevsky is a WW2 propaganda piece
>Eisenstein is watched carefully to make sure he doesn't "stray into formalism"
>next film is Que Viva Mexico
>literally too much goes on Que Viva Mexico for me to bother describing, he gets fucked by many people in multiple countries
>next film is grand historical epic Ivan The Terrible to be directed in 3-parts
>it is set to be a masterpiece
>Eisenstein portrays "Ivan" as "terrible"
>Stalin is outraged, has Part 2 banned and Part 3 halted in production and destroyed
>dies of a heart attack
