No, they cannot. It takes years, and the biggest hurdle of them all is understanding the common, underlying logic and values of anime, manga, light novels and visual novels etc.. Most people just can't do it because it's so completely alien to them. It cant even be explained to them. There's a huge cultural gap between the West and Japan that largely cannot be bridged.
But most people don't even get that far and struggle with far more basic things than that. There are few people who have a solid understanding of anime.

A combination of nostalgia and some weird satisfaction in knowing that there is some consistent things in the franchise (luke skywalker's story is mostly concrete because of the movies; we call this canon). More movies: more things becoming/not becoming canon.

Now this is where shit dives off the deep end...instead of protesting these outsider assholes and how they're trying to censor music (like they did in the 80s) many bands went along with it, because they don't want to be labelled homophobic, racist, sexist, etc. We're at the point where bands that make extreme music, can't showcase extreme ideologies in that music for fear of offending people. It's like someone being a fan of horror movie slashers, but complaining that they support violent imagery.
