In any case, a classically handsome Kylo Ren would have been far less effective. Why? Because Kylo Ren is pathetic. That's the point of his character in this movie; he's a spoiled, troubled, bratty, pathetic villain. It gives him pathos.
Deep down, he has no self-esteem. He deeply loathes himself. He was given this incredible gift at birth (the power of the Force), but he's totally incapable of handling it responsibly. He throws tantrums, he grandstands, he displays all the classic signs of a compensatory narcissist.
The compensatory narcissist is someone who feels so ugly and defective that he builds a false persona for himself. He wears a "mask" of confidence that, deep within, he knows is a lie.
Tell me... Would any of this come through with a lantern-jawed, 10/10 actor playing Kylo? Would it be nearly as believable?
I think Driver was well cast, and I can't understand why people have such a problem with him. It's like they've completely misunderstood who is character is and why he does the things he does.
