The reason it gets shit, is probably patricians trying to distinguish themselves by calling it a sell-out for "only" being what it is, instead of art of the highest calibre it was supposedly going to be, when it was still called Empire of the Sun.
How good it would have been is questionable though, and it's not like we'll ever see the other version, so it's a moot point really.
