When I first saw the movie, it was exciting, and thinking about it afterward with a friend who had also seen it, I started to hate it.
I saw it a second time with a friend who was seeing it his first time, and noticed a lot of my critiques were either explained, completely unfounded in the beginning, or just not a big fucking deal at all.
The story made sense, the characters actions and motivations made sense; I still hated Death Star 3.0 and the poor implementation of Captain Phasma and R2D2, the biggest complaint being the third Death Star. But as RLM said, the real drama of that part of the film is the growth of Rey and Kylo as characters.
Despite what some say here, it felt like Star Wars to me. It has possibly surpassed Return of the Jedi as my third favorite.
It was 4 AM and he was clearly delirious, once it comes out on DVD and he watches it 5 more times he'll have plenty of material for the Plinkett review.

I expected him to analyze the movie not disregard the bad things in it entirely. It was a nice action movie but as a star wars movie it had some major flaws.

Remember in Plinkett's review how they're ripping on the "poetry" thing like Obi-Wan screaming no when Qui-Gon dies (like Obi-Wan and Luke), or Anakin blowing up the Trade Federation, or the ceremony at the end? Valid criticisms. They also went on a 5 minute rant about the merchandising and toys in the AOTC review.
But then Force Awakens comes in, does all that shit 10 fold and they just shrug off "poetry", merchandising, plot holes, and such that they completely pissed on the prequels for. They also mock Lucas Iike they're jealous of him or something. So many mean little digs at the man who didn't even do anything to them personally.
Now I see that, they're kinda burnouts. Yeah, I thought the Plinkett's review was fun at the time, but in retrospect, it was a waste of their time. They're approaching middle age, and what are they doing? Making critical reviews and making shit little movies that can't be criticized because "they're bad on purpose".
Something about Mike disgusts me. When Rich was saying "meh, Force Awakens was ok" or when Rich criticizes the movie, Mike would give him this look like "really, that was your problem with that". This is the same fucker that not picked the hell out of the prequels. I don't get it.
