Is anyone else here a film major in college? Currently in my freshmen year at Temple University. If so, what do you want to do in the industry?

I major in busting nuts in your gf.

I'd rather not be flipping burgers for a living after college if that's what you're asking.

I'm majoring in Film Studies and minoring (and planning to get a Master's in) Adult Education at The University of Georgia, third year. Go Dawgs.

My dream is to actually teach film and/or video editing to high school or college students. I'm actually really passionate about it.

One thing that disappoints me though is that I'm not making nearly as many student films as I thought I'd be making. In three years, I've made two. One was about a threesome of roommates coping with the fact one of them was a zombie, and the other was an experimental film using color and sound frequencies.

Oh well. I love it.

Surprisingly few film students on here...

Non film related, are the girls on campus as hot as people say?
>>
Thinking about going to a drama/acting school.
Have this fantasy about being a struggling actor living in a shitty apartment and working odd jobs.

Already fulfilled my cook/drug addict fantasy for 5 years now.

Junior at University of Miami. Screenwriting.

This semester I wrote an amazing pilot and a subpar feature. My professor loved the pilot and is going to help me develop it into a pitch.

Thanks. And I'd rather them be Tarantino wannabes than boring kids (and adults) with no ambition. As pretentious a rep that film school has, most of the people I've met are really down-to-earth, innovative, and resourceful people.

But yeah, I'm excited to see where this career goes. I have this little fantasy where I teach at a community college near my hometown in suburban Atlanta, and the people that go to class are the ones that actually want to be there, are passionate, etc.

Tarantino is the ultimate film school director

Structure is vital. The biggest problems for why scripts fail are not poor concepts but poor pacing.

If you don't explicitly outline your script before you begin writing, you're going to fail.
>>
>>63929226
How do you personally outline? This is the biggest thing I struggle with.

enjoy your 4+ years in North Philly surrounded by pan-handling niggers and hordes of man-children who feel the need to get hammered and party every weekend like clockwork

>>63929168
What's the pilot about? Just a couple of keywords if you're afraid of giving away too much

Not him, but have taken about four screenwriting courses.

Here's a little diagram I made from my notes when it came to structure. I can elaborate if you're interested.

Practice.

Hollywood cares less about good ideas than it cares about work ethic and talent. You need to be able to write a full script if you want to be a professional writer.

If you're free this week, I'd encourage you to write a 50-page script. Until you can write 50 pages in a week without much stress, you aren't ready to write professionally.
>>
What degree do you have after college ? Is it worth anything ? do you get a bachelor or is it lower ?
>>
>>63926391
I went to film school to shitpost on tv on a higher level than the average anon.
>>
>>63929397
I think I could easily do that. My problem is I probably explain too much when I write. Is there a script of a film you think is very well written I should read? Or a couple, I don't mind. I enjoy reading them.

Oh and I don't have the ambition to break through in Hollywood or anything. I just enjoy writing and want to see how far I can take it

This is what I did for my last feature. Obviously it's subject to change, but if you have ~30 scenes you know you'll include, writing is far easier. Make the outlines as in-depth as possible, so you don't forget anything when you come to write a scene.

My outlines are very disorganized, but it works for me.

1950s sitcoms. The Red Scare. Lesbians. Jews. Mafia involvement in the TV industry.

As a show about Hollywood, it's definitely pandering to the industry, but I think it would also be very enjoyable to watch. Everybody who's read it has loved my characters and dialogue.
>>
>>63929474
I hate any advice that boils down to "just be yourself(:" but when it comes to style, there's not one good way. Direction and dialogue vary wildly between writers.

However, convention is absolutely important. I'd recommend that you read the scripts for Chinatown or Mad Men to learn the exact format for film and TV. Both the film and the show are also excellently paced, and give you a good idea of how your work ought to be structured.

If you're more interested in action-adventure, check out the pacing of the original Star Wars. It moves with a fluidity that almost every sci-fi writer since has tried to replicate.
>>
Not a film student or uni student but very curious on what's the worst piece of shit someone has tried to hail as a masterpiece in your lectures?
