Max, did I ever tell you about the time your father organised a dangerous film shoot despite several warnings from experts, which resulted in the deaths of actor Vic Morrow and two children, and that because he was wrongfully acquitted, he had the opportunity to spawn you, and that only nepotism allows you to continue your career as a mediocre screenwriter?

He was a good friend.

The antagonist of the film is a whiny shithead who had everything going for him due to intense nepotism, but turned out to be a colossal failure anyway.

Probably hits a bit too close to home for Max.

The powers she showed hinted at previous training so maybe that child-padawan-mind-wipe theory is right. That they didn't outright say it in TFA was a mistake if so - maybe Luke was meant to explain it all to her at the end but they just left it out thinking the scene was more emotional as is. If it isn't something like that then she is a flat-out Mary Sue and there are no excuses for it.

Did think Mark Waid got it wrong in his tweetering at Landis about Superman being the 'original' Mary Sue. Always thought of Supes as the posterchild for Power Creep more than him being a Gary Stu. He started out just a super strong train-stopper who could also leap over tall buildings, but then they added flight, frost breath, laser eye beams, etc., until he became this untouchable all powerful icon... whereupon then they had the pure cheek to sue Fawcett out of existence over Captain Marvel's powers being too similar...

I don't think you can retroactively apply the term Mary Sue to a character who pre-dates its origin. At a pinch you could call the current incarnation a Mary Sue but it's not an exact fit - he's just a disgustingly overpowered thug who's not even worth a read any more. You certainly couldn't apply it to Supes's older self back when he was vaguely interesting.

Yeah I can forgive oldee writers but current writers who maintain his gary stu status are despicable

Because he's a shitty writer?

His criticism in this case is right though. I think too many contemporary writers are tripping over themselves trying to cater to a very specific idea of "the modern female archetype" in a ham-fisted attempt to make up for perceived ill treatment of women in stories in the past.

The great irony is that every character who's made in this archetype is cookie-cutter, unoriginal, uninteresting and ultimately alienating. They're good at everything, and therefore are bad characters. If there's no conflict or rise against adversity, then why should we care?

Writers need to stop TRYING to write "strong female characters", and start writing them as people, regardless of gender. Until then we're going to keep seeing lame attempts like Rey.

liked the movie, max is a faggot, but he's right

I like Rey but he is absolutely right. I hope they tone it down in the second movie because she was Empire Strike Back powerful the second she picked up a saber.

He's not a shitty writer. The direction of his movies are shit

SJWs and identity politics are destroying any kind of discussion of film.

Should have listened to gamergate family

It's only the internet, anon. I know many who hated the movie and were puzzled when Rey suddenly grew 1000% in power.
