This stormtrooper could have been any other random child Finn himself could have trained with. Yet they played out in two completely different ways. Do you make it out to be a nature vs nurture debate, even with the obvious minor factors that would just happen with random chance? I mean I'm not just buying into the meme when I say this scene had a lot of emotion. A faceless stormtrooper saw right to stand up and took it upon himself to punish a former ally for betraying everything he believed in. He didn't run away, he didn't call for backup. In that stormtroopers mind he was serving justice, and he was doing it in an honorable way. Yet he gets cheated out of his work, his entire belief that he was forged in was shattered when he was gunned down.
I feel deep, honest empathy for that trooper. Even if you argue that the people who used him were wrong, you can't deny him his conviction. And that's why I think so many people respect him.

If he doesn't know what a lightsaber is, he might just think it's similar to his weapon, and he has a sense of fair play, or he wants the visceral thrill of beating down a traitor with a club. The shield likely would have actually been detrimental if it lacked the properties of the baton. Specifically, if he had it on, he may have tried using it to block a lightsaber, which would have more likely than not ended with him losing an arm. So in that case, he ditched what would slow him down or be detrimental, which happened to be his shield. As for the blaster, who knows? Maybe he just wanted to kill a traitor with his own two hands.
