Stage producers do this all the time.
The controversy of changing a race for no legitimate reason, especially if the character is established as a different race from an earlier work, gives the play more attention than it would actually get from basic advertising.
Basically the stage industry knows it only exists as a formality and a way for old actors to get work, and does whatever it can to make as much money as it can manage.
You can argue that it cost a ticket from most of us on /tv/, but if they'd cast a white actress we generally wouldn't have known about the play at all. This also ensured more hipsters and SJWs would feel obligated to buy tickets to keep up the appearance of not being racist.
Obviously Hermione is the cursed child the title is refering to.
